Arbitrary heat penalty system, which is based on number of weapon types being fired within 0.5 seconds, is too easy to circumvent unless you can predict every possible weapon load out that could be abused.

Instead wouldn't it be better to tie heat generated by an "Alpha" strike to number of heat sinks present on a mech. Regardless if they are single or double, one heat would equal one heat sink from an "Alpha" strike.

Any heat generated over the number of heat sinks in 1 sec, you will receive "double" heat as a penalty, possibly with some other nasty side effects (chance for ammo / Gauss explosion/ internal damage)

Basically:

A = heat generated in 1 second period

N= physical Number of heat sinks in a mech

M = Mech heat penalty multiplier (insert arbitrary number here, let’s say 2?)

P = Penalty heat A - N

///////////////////////////////////////////////

A < or = N then A + (P x 0)

A > N then A + (P x M)

This covers most high alpha builds, the only way to circumvent heat penalty is to use a large number of single heat sinks, or 2 Gauss Rifles.

The solution to the heat penalty is well know: 2 PPC + gauss (CTF, Vic, High, AS7) / AC 20 + Gauss - 2 PPC + Gauss (JM6) / 2 PPC + 3 Large laser... (STK)

Salute the new cheese !

We need something different and your idea is probably the most interesting, adapting the heat penalty PGI wants with more realistism and sense. This would surely lessen the number of PPCs in matches, but i'm not sure what other builds would be affected. The only problem would be making people memorize the formula and conditions so they would know they would be penalized. They could add some type of warning to UI 2.0 :)
