This post isn't about the presence of an aim assist in 3pv being needed/warranted (different discussion).
I'm reporting it does not behave logically.
Terrain seems to impact it in very strange ways. You can be looking at the horizon, then the crosshair will jump to 20deg down in to the earth. At first I thought it was locking on mechs and I could use it as a intel tool. It does work for that (intentional?) but also makes it nearly impossible to self-aim in a lot of situations.
The lock radius is pretty big, so you can sweep over a target and try to hold on it, then as soon as you're off it jump to nearly 10deg away from it. The behavior for random lock position seems to be the trigger for this. From what I can tell, your mouse movement while inside the lock box might also be impacting torso movement outside the box, so losing 'lock' can put your crosshair much farther from the target than it should. Speaking of that, it seems to 'work' but not maybe the way hoped. You can use the fastlock then track toward the panel you want and actually snipe 'better' than 1pv at medium range. <-more testing needed.
One thing is for sure, it makes locking on with streaks now easymode. Ditto for fighting small mechs in assaults. The lock mechanism punches through the lagshield, so you can waive the crosshair over where you think the light is and pull the trigger when it locks. MPL are very strong vs close circling lights in 3pv mode, and I'll be switching to it 100% of the time to kill them.
