...said the poor new guy speaking in open chat as my Orion got it's 1st kill, killing a new, stock Orion.

He was new and had no idea how to fire his Gauss....he panicked, my Orion croaked him.

I'm not trying to be a D-bag here, Devs, but a new player is screwed if he buys an Orion now.

HEP HIM JEEBUS PLZ!!!!

Thank you,

Primate

In other news, every other match I see people asking how to toggle out of third person view. So helpful for new players, amirite?

Did you bother to inform him of how to fire his weapon while you were in game? Or did you immediately run off to create this post without helping the poor person out? If they ask for help learning the game, the least we can do as more experienced players is help them along the way. The only real way we're going to continue to grow is if we, as a community, bother to teach the new players how to play the game. It's not all on PGI when I see things like "Oh god, he's new, we're so screwed." or new players getting TK'd at the start of the match for starting in 3PV because they don't know how to turn it off, or, heaven forbid, they like 3PV.

Would be better for the community to show that guy the ropes but probably better for TS's ego to blast him into bits, laugh maniacally and let the devs sort it out. I mean, that's what the tutorial they released months ago was for after all.

Better you tell people to just not use the weapon system and use something more reliable. Like ER-Large Lasers.

Lack of appropriate in-game information has been an issue since open beta started. This isn't new or interesting. Let's see how PGI handles the official launch and what they add on to the tutorial before we go full whiner-baby mode over something we knew wasn't going to be handled in a tutorial on the first day of a new feature.

Frankly, if you can't figure out how to play this game, then I've got news for you:

MechAssault is available for only $40 dollars on Amazon.

That's cheaper than both the Overlord and Guardian packages of Project Phoenix.

Yeah, I'm one of those elitist scumbags everyone's talking about.

PS: This points being made in this thread will be moot as soon as PGI pulls their finger out and implements UI 2.0 with some good tutorials, in order to easily educate new players who can't figure out how to enter the Menu in order to learn the controls of the game. They're already working on facilitating the experience for remedial gamers. So while we can all point and laugh at PGI for the moment, we all know that they will fix proper tutorials eventually. And then we can look forward to actually playing with those people who couldn't figure out how to play this game without an adult to hold their hand.

I don't mean to be so vitriolic, but I just ran out of caffe latté.

Stuff like this (ghost heat, default 3rd person with no map/radar) that are completely opaque to new players will kill this game. If I was a new player with no loyalty for the MW franchise, invisible game mechanics (to the point where my gun doesn't fire when I pull the trigger) would have me quitting.

If it wasn't for the forced 3rd person/no 1PV queues, this would make me sad. As it stands, I just shake my head in amazement.

I always take time helping new players getting familiar with the game. If anyone shoot their own team member at the begining of match, I'm not hesitate to react :D

Ummmm...he was like....ya know...SHOOTING at me with the weapons that did go bang when he hit the button, so no, I shot back, he perished, he disconnected.

If I wasn't sympathetic, I'd never have asked for help here on his behalf....sheesh.

While a movement tutorial is a wonderful step, this game really does need a combat/weapons tutorial for new players.

Even if I didn't already have this game (Which I do enjoy, btw) why the hell would I buy it on Amazon for $40 when I can buy it at my local used-game-shop for $3???

This is the issue.

3PV is a tool which can be leveraged by high skill players to peek around obstacles.

For its intended target audience (new players who don't understand the basics) it's just a crippling hindrance, since they can't really fight effectively with it on anyway.

Instead of 3PV, maybe just create a testing grounds kind of solo place where mechs can strut their sexy curves and big guns for the camera, then once rejoining the rest of us at this Mech Simulator, can get back in your damned cockpit and STEER!

This, plus allow 2 person drop in the tutorial. Allowing a veteran pilot to watch the new pilot as he/she learns the basics.

Yup. First match, no radar, can't fire my main gun when I pull the trigger (or I shut down after a couple shots for no apparent reason)... that stuff causes noobs to ragequit and never come back. Completely the opposite of what you want to put into a game to lure and retain new players.

I'm sorry to sound so condescending, but when did new users become drooling neanderthals attempting to bang rocks together to make things work? I mean, every single thing I have heard from the player base concerning new users make them sound like they have the IQ of a mentally stunted fruit fly. I mean, sure, maybe in the long term this is something that should be addressed in the UI, but how hard is it to play around with something for a minute or two to figure things out?

Isn't that a bit backwards. I mean, putting effective tutorials in after so many new players have left.

Don't you get it? Do you really think that anyone griping about ghost-heat, gauss delay, or any other feature gives two tugs on a dead dog's **** about new players? Do you think the OT really cared about the rookie he fragged? Grieving about the nerf that made your favorite build harder to play, but framing it in terms of its "impact on new players" gives you the opportunity to cry like a little girl about how you can't field the cheeze-whiz build you've been abusing, play the "concerned member of the MWO community," and wag the epeen all at once!
