It'd be quite a risk, but can't be implemented, 'cause that would lead to C-bill and salvage farming via fake/new accounts...
HC could work if accompanying a repair delay (or also include R&R) on 'Mechs used vs instant repairs (part of the old "Dropship mode"), but could be used for a 'Campaign mode' mechanism.

1) Due to public outcry in closed beta, PGI states there will never be 3rd PV
2) PGI backtracks and states there will be 3rd PV, but with an option to play hardcore that is restricted to 1st PV
3) PGI implements 3PV, but backtracks on hardcore mode saying it is not necessary, and posts a rambling apologetic http://mwomercs.com/...te-and-apology/ , which is mocked on several gaming sites.
The total lack of credibility on this issue alone, not counting multiple other issue, is a clear indication of the lack of "good faith" in PGI's interaction with this community.
If you are expecting R. Bollocks and P. Inureye to actually follow thru with 1PV hardcore mode, you have not learned from history.

It was technically "hard core", in that you could lose almost everything, and at any point.
I wouldn't want to see a hard-core mode like that in MWO, but IF there was a side-mechanic that'd allow for salvage - at the risk of losing your 'Mech (with some concessions), it'd be a nail-biting experience.
I absolutely wouldn't advocate that it be the ONLY mechanism... but if there was a mode - set aside with a separate 'stable' and equipment storage, possibly separate queue too: Assume anything from Solaris 1v1, to 4v4 Covert Raids, to full Companies (assuming there'd be enough people for various modes)... we'd have something a little like Diablo's HardCore mode.
There'd have to be a balance to expense, of course; probably through using House Rentals until someone's gutsy enough to drop in their owned units.
Anyway, that's my impression of a real Hard-Core mode. Anything less is not HC but rather just "hard mode". Semantics, I suppose.

Eventually nobody will have any money left to play hardcore mode and we can just drop the idea.

Only if your side loses... To the victor the spoils!

and 3 loses in a row due to the "newbs" or "damned lag!" and your garage is emptied out
Although that could make PGI a lot of money if you could buy back in to hardcore mode. $20 gets you a random medium mech and 500,000 Cbills to try again!

And then they have to pay $20 to buy back in for another chance. It's like gambling, only everyone eventually loses and there is no cash out.
