I am thinking about trying this mech despite its extreme short range:

Well, one recommendation I have is to switch it to Endosteel, that'll save you a good few tons. Also, if you're moving fast enough and make good use of cover, you won't need AMS. That'll free up some extra tons for jump jets so even you could change some of those small lasers to small pulse or mediums, or hell, medium pulses.

Just logged in to say almost exactly what Chadamir just said. Get rid of the ams and max your jump jets. The more JJ you have the quicker you can get up and over a building or mech to get away. In that build getting away after you get a shot off is probably the most important part of staying alive. . . and be really fast!

drop the ams and ammo, swap to endo steel, drop a jump jet and change the 8 small lasers to 8 small pulse lasers. Same range as a normal small but shorter beam duration and slightly better damage
