Just to let you know.. at this moment we do not plan on adding player created decals due to the various reasons you see things like this go very wrong in other games. But we are open to suggestions as to what types of decals you have in mind.. and yes.. that horse head looks wicked!

Bummer about not being able to adorn my mechs with hilarious MSPAINT crafted male genitalia, awesome that you're taking the time to let us know. Awesome.

No need to reply, but there are 2 games I've played recently with pretty awesome decal systems; War Thunder and Star Conflict. WT's was fairly open; you could scale decals to almost repaint your aircraft. SC was a little more restricted, but has a great selection of decals.

Edit: PICS.

Several games allow players to create their own decals by using an assortment of pre made icons. STO for example has a simple three piece icon creator that uses, a background, and list of icons which players can use chose two of to create their logos. APB, which has one of the best player created content option I've ever seen in a game, has a whole editor players can use to create artwork to customize various items in game.

It would be great of MWO could have some thing in between. While I would love to have APB's detailed icon editor for MWO I understand that it is not going to happen. However I think a built in editor that allows players to create their own icons would be a good compromise. The editor could have the fallowing features.

A variety of basic geometric shapes.
A various premade icons. Such as bombs, arrows, animals, leaves and the like.
Numbers and letters in different fonts.
The ability to rotate and re size the above.
The ability to use all the colors in MWO to be applied individually to the above.
A min/max size for the over all decal.

This would be a good solution for players wanting to create their own unit icons.

I have seen 2 of the 3 examples given, WT has an option that seems perfect for Mechwarrior, although i never did get deeply into the game. Wt has a simply straight forward decal option that looks great.

Why can't we do a company community modded approval period to upload them? You must submit them as part of a unit, they have to be approved by PGI or volunteer community mods and then they can be entered into the game? I don't see why this would be that dangerous?

The trouble with using WT decals on our mechs is the texture system, I think. The planes in WT don't have nearly as many moving parts as a mech, and compared to our stompy doom machines the aircraft there are far more organic in shape and design, which I imagine would lend itself well to decal textures that can expand fluidly over a plane's surface. Look at the pictures higher up for an indication - the spitfire has one decal that covers most of the fuselage and parts of both wings. I think that would be hard to wrap around a mech.

HOWEVS, if there were specific locations on a mech that could have decals of varying sizes, that would be awesome. I'm guessing the challenge here is also related to our mech designs - WT can get away with a robust decal system because all the aircraft are essentially variations on the same basic design. I'm guessing in our case that the art team will need to look at each mech individually and work out decal zones, which would probably be a lot of work, especially for mechs with crazy geometry, like the spider and some of the lights.

I imagine the Awesome would shine here, as it's effectively a billboard now anyway.

Anything anime related and/or Japanese kanji would be awesome.

Would also be cool if we could have our pilot names printed on the side of the mech, like they have on fighter jets.
I am not too keen on anime decals but japanese art or text seems like a perfect fit for Draconis Combine.

It would be a nice touch if mechs had the mechwarrior's name stenciled on his mech. (Maybe even add some marks for completed achievements and such.)

All lore-based logos, such as everything on Sarna, would be a good start.

I also think having some sort of system for custom unit logos would be a good idea. Just require the submitter to have premium time and only allow one submission per month/quarter/year to keep the workload down.

Very much agree with this. It could be a set place on the mech and just display the persons name as it is in game (which are already vetted for profanity and such).

Paul I think it's pretty simple-fluff wise we want our faction and unit decals as found on cammospecs online, including all the clans(im a hells horse player, I want to wear my clan colors proudly)

As others have pointed out examples like warthunder were decals can be placed, sized, flipped etc is a good place to start.

I would like to argue that. "Online Interactions are not rated by the ESRB."

Thus you are not beholden to any reason NOT to allow players to make decals.

Also... DAMN IT I WANT TO BEABLE TO RUN ELP'S LOGO!

well, i had a look across most mechs, palce for decals would be quite small and hard to notive.

The special geometry Clans have some nivce place on the leg parts

Just because user Decals aren't planned doesn't mean PGI wont be a little bit inspired by the suggestions that were posted here ;-)

I would agree with the War Thunder system being the best middle ground. A large amount of pre-approved and made decals that can be placed on your mech would be great. Heck, to make premium time more appealing you could do the same thing as WT too, i.e. allowing premium time members to place more decals on their mechs.

Additionally, monthly contests could be held to add fan made decals to the stock of pre-approved ones on a user voted system. Say, top 20 decals get added?

I just want to echo the sentiment that decals need to be BIG if people are going to spend money on them. On a huge high-res concept art painting of an assault mech, it looks great to have loads of small decals. But that's very far from how mechs look in the game. They're usually seen from a distance, maybe only taking up 200-400 pixels in height on our screen. At that scale, a tiny pin-up girl on the ankle is basically invisible.

I'm not paying for something that only people with a 72" 4K screen with the ultra high graphics settings can possibly recognise on the battlefield.

Hi Paul. Yea I agree. I remember back in my CS 1.4/1.5 days when people would spray decals on the walls and ground that you always had the nudity ones (mostly genitals lol).

Yea, like how CoD BO did. Even though they restricted it to shapes, you still got boobs, and spreading legs and penis and everything imaginable from people.

Users create hats and other items for Team Fortress 2 and the community is crazy about it. Part of the reason the game is still going so strong...and making money.

I think we should have as many Lore-related decals as possible, purchasable for CB.
Any decals completely unrelated to lore could be released in 'packs' for MC only.

Lots of great ideas here. Excited to see what actually winds up in the game, particularly to identify your faction, unit and individual. Wonder if some decals could be achievement unlocks?

Am I the only one running my mech with regular camo? God damn it is a military vessel and I use it in the field... All I wish for is different camos i can predefine for different environments.
