I don't think that an integrated VOIP will do any good for MWO - quite the opposite.
While I don't know how the infrastructure will be build to create this option - i can imagine that the costs as well as time for the integration will cost time and more important money.
Next to this "money sink" I think most MWO players will disable this function. I will for sure.
Simple - i don't drop as a single player - and if i do I'm in no moot for conversation - so i will use TeamSpeak all the time.
I'm sure a huge part of this community will simple not use VOIP - for several reasons.
On the other hand - integrated VOIP should also force the disabling of queue separation between solo players and the group queue.

Not to mention, typing commands while trying to keep my TAG on the moving enemy is nigh impossible.

That would be a gamebreaker for me, to not only read but also hear the whining of those QQ-Warriors.

Seems like your concept of group is 12 man unit ONLY.
A lot of people just play with their every day friends right off their friends list. And having integrated VOIP will be a dream come true...
PGI, please dont stop.

I am sure PGI had heard from a lot of players in reddit and forums that they wish for a mute button. VOIP is a hot topic after all. PGI might be dumb, but it is not that dumb...hehehehe...he...

Russ very specifically said that the ability to mute players (rather, not the ability to, but the UI to be able to do so) was the last thing they were working on to implement VOIP.
The ability is baked in, they are using teamspeak's SDK. This is Teamspeak VOIP, it just don't require the client or dedicated servers.

Not really, they will most likely go with an existing solution that can be integrated into MWO. Most of their time will be spent on the interface and bug testing.
So here is my "opinion" on VOIP.
1. It's 2015, VOIP has been a thing in games since the early 2000s.
2. It's a team game that throws random people together into a team. TS/Mumble do not really account for that or cover that situation.
3. It might not add value for yourself, but even in a group we might not have a full 12 man and being able to quickly hit a different Push-to-talk button and rattle of our plans so the smaller group has some clue or toss out a warning like someone being NARC'd will be very handy.
4. Some people don't play Assault Mechs or Light Mechs so PGI should just stop wasting time and money developing them for those who might, right? A lot of PuGgers will get some good milage out of this. Sure there will be occasional disruptive people, but that is what Mute is for and every game I've ever played with built in VOIP had the option to mute specific players.

As someone who regularly also plays with a big unit using TS, I have no use for the in-game VOIP. I have no issues with TS at all, in fact it is very unlikely the VOIP will have the same flexibility and multiple functions of TS.
A command wheel a la CounterStrike would be infinitely more useful than VOIP, in my mind. With a spam blocker to prevent people from spamming the same voice command multiple times.

Absolutely.
There's no reason to stop "to save resources" as the system is basically done. It needs a bit more UI work and that's it.
God knows, I have a huge friends list, and it's a massive hassle as everyone has their own VOIP programs - Teamspeak, Vent, Mumble, C3, etc. We often run very mixed groups, and it'd be nice for everyone to be able to just default to the built in client during these occassions rather than trying to herd people all to one program or another which inevitably ends up with one guy who doesn't have that program installed, etc, etc.
Basically, having it installed doesn't hurt anyone who doesn't want to use it, and it gives those who DO want to use it a very easy option: turn it on, press push to talk. Done.
Mixed 12 man CW group? Say, 2 4 man groups and 2 2 man groups? Now you don't have to figure out which unit's VOIP to use, everyone has the option to just press a button and bam! You're all on the same VOIP...
WITHOUT having to leave your unit's VOIP. You can still have TS running, on a different PTT key.
In short: The presence of this feature can't hurt you if you don't want to use it. Just press "Mute".
The presence of this feature is an immense help to a whole lot of other people.
Simply assuming everyone is like you kind of makes you a jerk. There are all kinds of players out there, and this is and has remained a very much requested feature throughout the entirety of MWO's existence. Lots of people want it, a lot. Why would you even ask for it to be scrapped, when its presence doesn't affect you in the slightest if you choose not to use it?

Yeah, to be honest I'd go so far as to say that MWO is the friendliest massively multiplayer game I've ever played. Sure, there are bad eggs, but far, far less than in most games. It's the upside of having a generally older playerbase and appealing only to a smaller demographic, I assume.
Still, as much as I'm looking forward to this feature, I'll have it globally muted in most PUG matches. I'm absolutely looking forward to it though for small-group play, more than anything else.

Obviously, then, they decided it was worth the resources which are honestly quite minimal, as they're just integrating the pre-made and well tested Teamspeak system... and it's not like they can get those resources/time back.

Just to talk with friends. Not with random peoples. It works a bit like skype.
But most of the games got a VOIP, problem is most of the games have there pack of kids who got some problem with there attitude (but who did not had some problem when he was young. Remember, you were a "pyjama" before.)
MWO should have the VOIP. Heck, it's a game where you control 100 tons monster of steel. In the Lore they had the capacity to speak to eachothers. We should be able to do the same here.
If you don't want to hear that, just put down the volume of the VOIP and that's it. No need to cry or ask to NOT implement that thing YOU don't want.
That's not your game. It will never be.
VOIP is coming.
