I have had some luck using my opened claws as a shield for the juicy CT. They have a boost of 17 armor each, making them helpful to take some of the damage.

A big issues is that people tend to all aim at the first crab that shows up because of the damage they can dish out.

It has Atlas / Dire syndrome for sure. It's a big imposing target but also unfortunately has a big CT hitbox.

Just farting around in smurfys with a build I quickly threw this together

http://mwo.smurfy-ne...7a4ca2c060ae1c0

If link doesnt work: (2)LBXAC10 (2) ERPPCs (2)SRM6s. It can poke at range (giggidy) and wreck at close range..... at least on paper. Could drop the SRMs down to 4s. The best part is this build can be used on all 3 variants for build consistency.

Shame I got my one night on MWO last night :( I wanna test it. Someone wanna test and maybe throw up a youtube video? PWEASE ??

Rule of thumb, you don't want an XL on a King Crab build to get close and personal. If you want to go XL, I'd reccomend Gauss Rifles and to play a fire support role.

Huge center torso makes it XL friendly.

Try this.

Besides you've got a long range build. The three MPLs are pest control. With increased speed, you should be able to roll damage far better, as well as stay far enough back that you shouldn't snuff it too easy, and by the time you do press the flesh in the end game, and roll that damage, your 3 MPLs should be significant.

I tend to slap an AMS on all of mine. These things are missile magnets and they ALL go straight to the CT.

I can tell just by looking at the build it would run WAY too hot. I would switch the LBX's to AC10's, and either drop down to a single ERPPC, or change them to two LL's.

SRM 6 without artemis is typically a mistake. I'd either free up a bit more weight and add art or drop down to SRM4s and add a bit more ammo/armor, etc.

Personally, I like the Crab. It feels faster and more maneuverable than the Atlas and seems to suit my primary play style. During fast-moving games with my Atlas I have chased the rest of my company without ever getting off a shot (which probably means I need to adjust the load out). The high mounted weapons off-set the broad torso area and the glass armor. The twin AC20s are devastating to anything in the forward firing arc (including friendly fast movers who blindly jump in front of me). I get more kills with the Crab and it excels administering the coup de gras to wounded enemy mechs on a consistent basis. Now, if it only had MASC or an ECM ...

According to my play in both XL and Standard builds there is very little difference between the two, at least in terms of survivability. By-and-large, relatively few deaths are from side torso. Most are loss of CT.

The maneuverability and loadout advantages I feel outweigh the hazards of XL builds. YMMV.

I so agree with this. My king crab brawler with 2 AC/20 almost always had it's CT go first before STs ever goes so XL would be big help. I should switch over to XL engine then. :) I actually feel weaker in King Crab than I am in Atlas Boar's head with XL 400 engine and my Atlas BH does 2-3 x more damage score than my king crab simply because my BH survives longer at brawling than my KC can ever hope to brawl. My KC moves slower than my BH as well so XL engine might solve some of speed problem that I had to endure with my KC for brawling. :) I already have AMS on both BH and KC but missiles hurt KC far more than BH simply because KC has far bigger disc area and moves slower to evade LRMs.. Switching over to XL would increase evade factor on KC like BH does have.. I'm working toward radar deprivation module that would help both big against LRMs.
