Just a thought. Get your tinfoil hats ready.

When the combine let the Free Worlds League open a wormhole in hopes that they could hold a border against the clans, the agreed upon ceasefire kept any invasions that didn't direct them towards the clan border off the menu. Doing so would provide a huge relief to both Rasalhague and the Combine.

Then recently, the Combine got a much needed influx of merc units thanks to the Contract value boost. We had enough players to start taking back clan worlds.

...but suddenly, Mercstar signs on with House Marik and becomes belligerent, attacking worlds that the FWL/Draconis truce marked as not to be attacked. This has led to a large push to close the wormhole. While there are certainly enough players in the Combine now to hold off the Smoke Jaguars, or at least to slow them, much of our efforts are being burned to close up the wormhole worlds so that we don't bleed them to Mercstar.

...but isn't that exactly the sort of thing that the Jaguars need right now? If the Combine were to have only two major enemies to focus on at this time (Davion and Jaguars, as Steiner seems to have their hands full with the Falcons ATM), we wouldn't have too much difficulty in taking back many of the worlds that the Jags had conquered.

So is Mercstar's belligerence really just about "We want someone to fight", or are they doing a delaying action in order to buy time for the Smoke Jaguars until the Kurita contracts depreciate in value and we lose most of our Merc support?

Are there any holes in this theory?

Clan Merstar innumerable, impossible to guess intention. Many doubt they have any intentions. Some theorize that they operate like a colony of zooids

You're over thinking it. They joined a faction because one of the groups that makes up MS likes the FWL and so its members could get easy faction awards, like mechbays. Since none of us actually control our faction there is no way to enforce treaties when someone joins the faction. So MS will go where the fights are, regardless of any agreements.

Welll... there's some good reqasons here why PGI has to create the community position of Faction Mod to run the interests of the factions, since it won't be left in the players incapable hands (sorry Roadbeer and Stingr4y, you try.)

Or create the MRBC which creates unit statistics that deal with whether or not a unit can be hired, at what rate and how short a leash they are kept on by a faction.

But... I suspect we shall hear more about Phase 3: Logistics by march.

They love turret drops and pug farming, its what the mega merc zerg faction is all about. That and advancing the clan intrests as they have an advantage over the IS, not that MS seeks out any and all advantages it can before fighting somewhere they feel safe.

Actually we use a room full of small monkeys who fling darts at an Inner Sphere Map once a week. They have been very good at locating salmon so far! Seriously though, we just follow the fights really. No hidden contracts or such.

Honestly I think it's decidedly less sinister and sexy than most of the forums would like. If anything, I believe House Kurita and Mercstar operate very similarly, even if we might have different goals. The DCMS functions as a council of all active (fields 12 mans or more) units, each with a single vote to decide on the general policy of the house.

Any Mercstar reading the thread feel free to correct me, but aren't they a coalition of 9-10 12 man teams that each have their own individual vote on what their next contract should be?

more like 6-8 teams, with legionnaires and recruits separate. Recruits don't get a vote.
