I`m fairly sure it was a joke and a relatively common one at that.
Sort of like the very very old, I can defend myself I`m a master of macrame.


Doing Sudoku means one has given up on a real life.
Practicing Seppuku means one has given up on life.

End result = the same, but the former causes much pain over a much longer period of time, and thus is considered a more appropriate and honourable option to the noble Kuritan Samurai.
