It seems to me that a great deal of the complaints about balance and clans being OP and all the rest of it come down to communications

TS and practise communication pounds everything else into the ground.
The decent+ teams are on the clan side
The clans win.

(yeah, yeah, overall and pretty much, etc, etc, YMMV)

Biggest problem we have is PRACTISE. few if any pugs use comms.
Why?
Because few if any pugs use comms.

Also, while the in game voip SHOULD be a huge advance, I can't understand a single fracking word most of the time, so it's basically useless.

Here's a suggestion to improve comms, and to give that practise in using it.

In addition, it should boost PUGs performance while offering minimal improvement to the good teams

For any CW defence (because I'm told that Defence are more PUGs than Attack), or for both sides in fact

And for any solo queue game, add a +1 slot.
"Commander"
Commander gets no mech, and no mech XP. They are basically a special spectator

Commander will earn 10% of the team TOTAL CB
Commander will earn 2% of the team TOTAL XP as GLOBAL/PILOT XP(think that works out at ~120% of standard?)

What can the commander do?

1. View battle map
2. Issue movement orders on the battle map
3. Use text and voice chat to pass on information at a unit, lance and company level
4. Get HIGH QUALITY VOICE sent to them (so they can actually understand people)
5. Spectate a mech to see what is going on.

Voila.
Pugs get to practise command
Pugs get experience in listening and following commands
You can use it to train people if you are a unit
