So, obviously, trial mechs need an update.

I would be willing to do a list of trials for IS as well...but any thoughts or ideas regarding these builds. I tried to stay with something pretty heat efficient with a bit of punch. A lot of these are starter builds we give to the new players who join our unit (with some modification to remain with stock omnipods) and they seem to have quite a bit of success with them.

Okay, as a dumb IS freebirth that only occasionally uses his clan mechs, what's wrong with the Wubhawk?

EDIT: Oh. I expected that to be 'disappoint'.

Does no one else think that the trial mechs are an issue for the benefit of the new player experience? The current trials are terribad...

I would agree, give them good trial builds for sure.

I've already talked about Clan "Champions" of sorts, using ONLY stock variant omnipods with a C-bill bonus (though not quite the Invasion level of bonus).

There's always one good variant that could be made into a decent functioning build (like Nova-S, Mist Lynx-C, Summoner-D, Gargoyle-D, etc) with their default omnipods.

Seems like noone is interested honestly. So, whatever.

Did they take away the Stormcrow trial with the 3 mediums and 2 large? That was a blessing for new clanners in CW.

Anything would be a step up from the trash that is Trial mechs.

Some of the IS trials are ok...all the clan trials are nuclear furnaces with bad builds...

Unfortunately yes.

It's one of the few times where telling PGI to keep a mech on permanent rotation is a thing to do.

It was really the only solid trial mech of the bunch for either side. Honestly...

Truth. The Timber and Direwolf weren't HORRIBLE...if you told your new guys which weapons to remove entirely from the rotation to make the heat manageable. :/

Yes, though most of the IS champions are at least not terrible heat efficiency, aside from that Banshee. The Clan trials were all nuclear furnaces aside from that SCR prime.

As a recently new player (Oct 2014), one thing that was almost a bad mistake was judging mechs by their tial loadout. The Victor and Summoner are pretty newbie friendly (ie harder to overheat somewhat quick), but they are definitely not what someone needs to spend their cadet funds on. The Hunchback and Nova are pretty decent if you already have a ton of time in energy mechs, but they are not for starting players.

I would hate to be starting over again

It should not be that difficult for newer players. The trial mechs should give new players a legitimate idea of what they are going to want to play. Trial mechs with solid builds would go a long way to showing players what they are dealing with.

If they were going to give new players a legitimate idea of what they want to play, they should double the cadet period (so 50 games), then open up the mechlab- all non MC mechs and gear at no cost- for the duration of their cadet period (and then remove the free stuff at the end of the cadet period). That way they can truly mix, match, experiment, and try the builds suggested to them by their seniors. Trials, of any sort, no matter how well built, will never allow a new player to figure out what they enjoy and are comfortable driving.
