hello, current 3/3/3/3 system allows for 3dw 3tbr 3scr teams, not giving much sense to go 3gar 3smn 3nova for example
i am not trying to address mech balance in this post, but rather give reason to choose other mech than the best in its category

previously there was an event where groups of different sizes and weight limits could qualify, i think this was a quite good try how to do it

basic idea:
conditions:
  • we presume the 3/3/3/3 is the desired result
  • the total group weight should lay in between 600-720 (example)
rules:
  • each weight category does have a buffer, 60 tons for light mechs, 120 tons for medium mechs, 180 tons for heavy mechs, 240 tons for assault mechs (example)
  • the free buffer is 120 tons (60+120+180+240+120 = 720)
  • by choosing a mech, you remove the tons from respective buffer, if the buffer is empty you remove the remaining tons from free buffer
this way, you can have a standard 3/3/3/3 with 600-720

but you can also have, for example, 2 locusts + 2 commandos (60+30), 3 hunchbacks (120+30), 2 orions (150), 3 atlases (240+60), for a total 120 of the free buffer

and what if the groups are of different size rather than 12?
size X, buffer: light: (X*5), medium (X*5+60), heavy: (X*10+60), assault: (X*15+60), free buffer: (X*10), min total weight: (X*50)
(limit and max reachable weight are just observed comments)
  • group of 2, buffer 10/70/80/90/20 , thus its limit 1/2/1/1, min weight 100, max reachable weight 175
  • group of 3, buffer 15/75/90/105/30 , limit 2/2/2/1, min weight 150, max reachable weight 220
  • group of 4 (lance), buffer 20/80/100/120/40 , limit 3/3/2/2, min weight 200, max reachable weight 295 (vs current 375)
  • group of 5, buffer 25/85/110/135/50 , limit 3/3/2/2, min weight 250, max reachable weight 345
  • group of 6, buffer 30/90/120/150/60 , limit 4/3/3/2, min weight 300, max reachable weight 420
  • group of 7, buffer 35/95/130/165/70 , limit 5/4/3/2, min weight 350, max reachable weight 490
  • group of 8, buffer 40/100/140/180/80 , limit 6/4/3/3, min weight 400, max reachable weight 535
  • group of 9, buffer 45/105/150/195/90 , limit 6/4/4/3, min weight 450, max reachable weight 580
  • group of 10, buffer 50/110/160/210/100 , limit 7/5/4/4, min weight 500, max reachable weight 620
  • group of 11, buffer 55/115/170/225/110 , limit 8/5/4/4, min weight 550, max reachable weight 680
  • group of 12, buffer 60/120/180/240/120 , limit 9/6/5/4 (9 locusts or 6 cicadas or 5 dragons or 4 awesomes), min weight 600, max reachable weight 720
side effect of this is also that groups do not vary much in their tonnage and can be put easier together by the matchmaker, for example it is guaranteed that any 3 lances put together will be between 600-885 tons (instead of current 300-1125 possible)
other combinations of groups are also quite stable on tonnage
6 groups of 2: 600-1050 (advantage of more disorganized team)
3+3+3+3: 600-880
6+6: 600-840
5+5+2: 600-865
4+4+2+2: 600-940

what do you think? those are just basic examples, the numbers can be adjusted in the group buffer formula (for example to size X, buffer: light: (X*5), medium (X*5+60), heavy: (X*10+40), assault: (X*15+50), free buffer: (X*10), min total weight: (X*50), so there are not so many heavy mechs in small groups)
please provide feedback :) , thank you

While mechs that are at the top of their weight class are generally better, it's a fairly close run thing within each class because of the quirks. For instance, the LCT-1E (if kitted out correctly) will dominate just about everything but a crack firestarter pilot, and that is the lightest mech in the game.

I would rather that there be a c-bill bonus for being under the max class weight. So running a Hunchback gets you a 5 ton bonus. Running a Warhawk gets you a 15 ton bonus. And they can modify the multiplier for c-bills per ton depending on how they want to weight the different classes.

you need to look at 12v12 , not 1v1

the c-bill bonus will not help to balance the matches, gimping your team for personal profit is not well with teamwork i feel

ok simpler system:
min weight: ((group size)*50) , max weight: ((group size)*60)
group of 2: 100-120
group of 3: 150-180
group of 4: 200-240
group of 5: 250-300
group of 6: 300-360
group of 7: 350-420
group of 8: 400-480
group of 9: 450-540
group of 10: 500-600
group of 11: 550-660
group of 12: 600-720

(i would also change the "3/3/3/3 for any group" to "6/5/4/3 for any group", for example choose lighter assaults like awesome and field more mediums)

any groups matched are guaranteed to be 600-720
this can take the load of mix-n-match off from the matchmaker, focusing on sorting the groups by elo and creating more balanced matches, i.e. to "separate" the group queue into casual and competitive
your thoughts!
