As a player that doesnt play CW due to different reasons, I still think there's no reason to make use of the random matches to affect CW development, so here's my sugestion:
Taking some ideas from another thread about daily missions, my idea would require changes to the CW mode as well as a new mission type for the public queues.
In CW, each day there should be some sort of news feed announcing what happened in the previous day and what are the consequences or goals for the present day. If in the previous day one faction manages to conquer a number (to be defined) of planets belonging to another faction, in present day they will no longer be allowed to advance any further in that faction's territory and must consolidate the defenses of the captured planets, while being free to attack other factions as long as this goal was not reached in previous day against those factions. Example: day 1 Davion hits Kurita and Liao, they gain 5 kurita planets but loose 3 to them, while gaining 4 liao planets and only loose 1, lets say goal was reached against Liao but not Kurita, so in day 2 they can only defend against liao while kurita is still open to attack.
Outside CW, new mode to replace Assault perhaps. One thing I dont like about public queues is the randomness, so I would like a new mode outside CW that even though the matchmaker will fetch solo players and small groups mostly to fill the teams, it should put players of same faction together, and not allow IS pilots to take clan mechs and vice versa.
Meanwhile back in CW, before a planetary assault is launched, a series of wins must be achieved on that planet to open it for invasion. Then the rest of the fight can be made both in CW mode and in this new public queue mode. Lets say each force (defenders and attackers) on the planet get a starting tonnage, each mech destroyed will decrease this number, once the tonnage falls below the necessary ammount to launch another 12 man game, the battle for that planet is over.
One thing I would like to see in the new public queue mode, is each player automatically get assigned a pattern and colors of the faction they will fight for, so each team even if they're made of solo players only, will share the same colors and look like a team. Only in CW mode will a team be allowed to use their own colors.
Another example, lets say there's a Davion team dedicated to opening new planets for invasion because they want to or the davion community so decided, they do a good job and manage to open 3 planets for invasion, thats 3 planets davion players in the public queue mode may be droped in by the matchmaker, besides defensive games. Also it may be possible to use solo players (or small teams) who opted to fight in this new public queue mode to fill a CW game, except for the mission to open the planet for invasion which should be restricted to full teams in CW mode. So if in any day a faction playerbase is so low they dont have any 12 man teams to open planets, too bad, its members will only play defense.
Also after a planet has ben successfully captured or defended, there should be a cease-fire window of maybe a couple of hours, after which time it gets opened for attack by another 12-man unit. Or if a logistics-like system were in place, the tonnage available for either defensive or offensive forces can grow dynamically depending on the number of planets of same faction in jump range.
Anyway, if the proposed changes to CW mode are too much to implement, at least if a hybrid public queue and CW mission type were made, it would be very nice for those of us who always loved battletech and would like to see some more role-play in the way of missions between pure inner sphere vs clan forces, or even between different IS factions (or clan factions) where each team shares official colors of the faction they're playing with.
