One of the things that are planned for the Assault mode revamp is destructible walls. So... destructible terrain, finally.

Here's my question:

What if most maps had destructible walls, just placed around the map to create some interesting defensive positions. So in Assault mode, the walls would be near each base. But in Conquest mode, the walls may be near each resource rig. In Skirmish, the walls may be scattered in areas that are otherwise uninterested. This could possibly breathe some life into new areas of the map. Especially on maps like Polar Highlands and Alpine Peaks, it could radically impact the gameplay depending on game modes.

I'm not saying that every map should have 50 kilometers of walls to keep the mexican snipers out, I'm just saying that a few new fortifications here and there would be cool. And destructible terrain adds a bit more realism to the game.

Would you want that? Or would it bother you that we could tear down 20 feet walls of reinforced concrete, but not put a dent in the tiny blue cars on River City?

I like the destructable wall concept... Reminds me of building a base in Command and Conquer...

I think it's a great idea. I'm totally behind more cover being destructible, and having mode specific cover placed would certainly spice up existing maps.

Here's hoping walls can be full or half height, and the full walls break down to half height rubble before being fully destroyed. Cover that doesn't last will add a really interesting dynamic to every battle.

Honestly, we've craved destroyable map sections all along. Buildings you can reduce to piles of rubble, trees that can be blasted aside but absorb a little damage in the process, and so on.

I want to burn River City to the ground and fight among the flaming buildings while walls crash to the ground on and around you.

Heat effects, impact damage, damage absorption, shooting mechs through the windows from one side to the other...

MOAR PHYSICS!

Up for it, so long as people don't complain about gib particles from the buildings lowering their precious FPS :P

I try to play soccer with them, they are wonky with hit detection though....Imagine that!

I want a 'Mech made out of whatever they use for those tiny blue cars. Posted Image

we are finally getting to the level of sophistication blast corps had in the nintendo64 back in 1997 - except in blast corps you can level every building on a map... oh well i guess baby steps!
definitely a milestone though!

just have to point out that destructible walls and what blast corps had is not really destructible terrain.

destructible terrain is what the red faction series has. it's not just a Styrofoam wall you can break

Battlefield has done the best job of this to my knowledge, You blow out pieces of buildings at a time not the whole thing drops like a house of cards.

I like how PGI used bushes for trees on canyon (common practice) but when you break them the whole tree pops up.

Destructible terrain & cover would be epic. :)

Maybe certain walls could be broken down to increase the directions you can attack from.

Destructible terrain is well and truly overdue...

I can't imagine just how much better Forest Colony would be if I could burn the darned trees D:< Or Bog for that matter. AC20 vs root? AC20 wins.

But walls are a start. A good start.

If Bad Company 2 and the following BF3,4 are to be used as example, destructible walls are terrible places to seek cover lol trust me!

but, yay for destructible terrain/building, i love that.

It's neat.

Hopefully this means good things.
Not sure how I feel about destructible walls being a hard choke point... If they're kind of scattered around with obvious ways around them it could be nice.

Now all we need is to be able to bore chunks out of the trees in Forest Colony, and bring down buildings in River City. :D

I know destructible stuff like cover and terrain are cool features.

But implementing them in a server-side semi simulator online game is a colosal task... PGI is not the type of dev for that.

Synchronizing physics based real time destruction on all 24 clients is essential.

If part of the terrain is destroyed based on the simulations done in your PC using real time physics, then every single player PC MUST have came up with the same physic solution for the terrain destruction, otherwise, you'll see that your shots are hitting the enemy, but the enemy sees part of the terrain in between you... the wall hacking reports will sky rocket afterwards.
