OK so you have just made what you think is a great Mech ... but can you test it before jumping into battle? (Thinking of somthing like a simulator).

Does anyone know if there will be a simulator section to see how well your Mech stands up to a pounding .. or how long your lasers can fire before the heatsinks go over the top, or how fast it can run , or if you really should have left the jumpjets on etc. etc. ......Or is it going to be a trial by fire? (jumping straight into battle).

I've seen nothing written/posted about a testing area, but I think it would be a decent idea, just to get a feel for the loadout of your 'mech.
It tends to be rather useful in other games that do have the little test option, rather than throwing you off the deep end.

Read the 2nd paragraph for the most up-to-date info on testing.

Ghost Recon: Future Soldier did a great job with their "firing range" mode. I essentially hope for that. I made a post a long while ago in one of those "balancing the game" threads about this, since there's no reason why one should walk his happy *** into a battle with a completely wild and possibly useless config.

That would be a nice idea, you get something like the Firering Range mode where you are faced with one mech of each class, but they are just standing there. Every time you hit them, accidental or purposely, a statistic shows up that shows: The Range at which you fired that particular weapon, the damage done, how much armour was melted or blown off, whether any internal structures were damaged or destroyed etc.
Would be nice to see what a Catapult loaded with alot of SRM-2s would do to the back of an Atlas.
