What comes first? The multiple sketches or the colored art for the mechs?

As the post says, does anyone know the process that the MWO team follows when redesigning their mechs? I'm interested to know which comes first from FlyingDebris.

Does he start with multiple sketches that he pitches to the rest of the team, like this:

And then move on to a more polished version:

Or does it work the other way around? I'm curious about whether the polished art is the set design for the mech, or if it's really a rough (not very, lol) draft that he then does multiple sketches of to really nail down some of the finer details.

(P.S. my forum knowledge seems to have degraded to the point where I don't remember how to put spoilers in, if a mod wants to add them in for me, go for it.)

lots o sketches until there is consensus on the direction to take a design
then the more polished colored version
then black and white turn arounds based off of the colored version

Now that I seem to have caught your attention for a moment, would you mind explaining the redesign of the Dragon's arm (the cockpit is obvious, it looks much better)? Was it changed because of possible gameplay issues?

Seeing as you're interested in this stuff you may want to check out FZDSCHOOL's youtube channel. He's a concept art guy and has about 50 episodes where he goes over things like production paintings.

(first episode). Just thought you may enjoy it. Cheers.

fixing the arm was mainly because the right arm was always supposed to have a lower arm actuator there. Its just one of those situations where most of the existing art never shows an elbow and you just assume it's not there.

Actually it all starts with me sending this to Alex and telling him to expand on it a bit...

Well at least neither Fencer nor Foil are taken as Mech names. I see you were having a bad hair day though. Preferred epee or sabre myself.

Man's a gorram artistic dynamo. One little sketch and he's halfway to having the Commando redesigned for MW:O.

I want this mech to be playable for forum members like how they give in-game dealies to people who pre-order stuff these days. Whaddaya think, maybe a medium mech, high on armor, high on speed (lol), and with a single large laser? A kind of harassment mech. Call it the Pewz or PWZ-1A and here's the catch – it never had a left arm in the first place.

Usually, they do. My guess is that that picture was done in less than 10 minutes.
