I joined and committed on day 1 announce.
My previous history with MW is PC gaming and some fiction. Im not a loremaster just an average Joe who likes the stompey robots and has spent hours in the lab testing loadouts and builds.
The thing for me is, as far as I can tell, to join a House etc all you have to do is post in a public forum and ... I guess you're in? I dont know.
So I went and posted to join House X. So really, now what? They seem to be doing something... but what.
Devs, if you can hear me, please make it easier for people who havent been a member of a group back in the day to be involved.
Right now I have a theoretical allegiance to people who seem to be doing something but what that might be I haven't a clue.
I guess that Devs should be Comstar and let people know how this all works.

Any unit/clan/house you've joined is purely fictional at this point. What happens on these boards may/will be very different than what happens in game. More info will be revealed soon.

I enjoy the image of a cheating player being banned with the sudden, in-game appearence of a pristine, gleaming white, star league-era BattleMech...

I get where people are going on this, but I just want to log, load, get mission, say hi and coordinate, then start shooting people in the face.
I have enough hassle 9-6 without coming home to do another round of resume job seeking. It's a game, so I don't think it's unreasonable for me to expect it to be more fun than a job. (which actually pays me to do things I dont want to do rather than the opposite) I dont mind doing work but it should be fun or at least amusing or interesting work.

1. Great House.
You declare allegiance to one of the Great Houses of the Inner Sphere, and are assigned to one of many green starter regiments. You do missions for your House, and are awarded Loyalty Points by that House. At certain Loyalty Point thresholds, NPC recruiters start spamming your in-game mailbox with invitations to join the more well-known named House regiments. You can elect to stay in a certain House unit at any time, and invitations will keep coming as you pass more LP thresholds. Eventually, you will become a member of the most elite House unit if you want to.
2. Mercenary Unit.
You join a player-created mercenary unit. The unit can accept contracts from any House, earning Loyalty points by doing missions for them. Once certain LP thresholds are reached, the mercenary unit can fight for worlds on behalf of that House. The mercenary unit will have separate LP totals for each House, and doing missions for one will likely affect the LP for the others.
...or maybe they only allow joining the House-affiliated mercenary units. *shrug* It's a possibility.
3. Lone Wolf.
You are on your own. You can do missions with any House or mercenary unit, assuming they'll have you. You can probably earn Loyalty Points for a House, and maybe earn invitations to join a House unit at some point. Or if you find a mercenary unit you like, you can join that.
Of course, it's a guess at this point. But I figure it's an edumacated guess at least...

That sounds like what I am expecting.

I hope there will be player created house units.I know a lot of units that do not want to be mercenary's but want to play as a team for there chosen house

I'm wanting something like this available too. I chose Davion for my avatar because that's what I always played, but tbh I'm giving thought to joining the FRR to get into the middle of clan battles just because they get pounded the worst. My other thought is a mercenary unit, because war for money has a certain unscrupulous flair (although I've only really been hanging out in the General Discussion Forums thus far).
Even so! I think units within Houses would be a great way of sub-dividing them and have every belief the Devs will have gone this route when the game is revealed. People could join units like the 10th Lyran Guards, or create their own but I hope the names don't become too out of character. No military's going to allow a unit named PWNt U WiTH aN uRBaNMeCHzorz!! They'd have COs, NCOs, etc. much the same as any military force would, put their badging on their mechs, choose some similar traits in their color schemes, and roll together on missions instead of just getting thrown in with whatever Steiner players are available at the moment. In many ways it would be like the "Clans" in MW2's online community back in the day or corporations in Eve only these units would fight under a common flag, do similar missions against common foes, maybe have friendly/competitive rivalries, and join together if there's big 32 or 64 player matches.

Since this is likely one of the easiest parts of designing the game, it would be nice to have specific info on what units will and won't be available. The game is four or five months from release, and it would be cool to have just one thing nailed down for sure -- so far everything they've said has only made for more questions. I suppose that's at least partly intentional...
The reserved units that become available with enough Loyalty Points would likely be the same for every player within their House. If the unit name you want is reserved, all you would have to do is earn enough LP to be invited to that unit, and then decline any other invitations from other units. I highly doubt they're going to have the game force you to advance to the next unit if you don't want to. The only thing is, your 'chosen few' wouldn't be the only members of the unit, as anyone who reaches that threshold could join. If that's a problem, you might have to choose a different unit name than you're used to.
Personally, I'm not married to any one unit. I'd rather play through the levels the devs have designed for us to see what's up. Of course, I do have a list of favored House Marik units I'd like to try for so I'll have to wait and see if they're reserved or not.
