Just completed a model this morning. I've been picking on it off and on for the past couple months.

I'll edit this post later with some proper images and a deviantArt link. For now a couple clay renders to show off a few details. I based the ER Medium Lasers on the Rhinemetall laser turret (a real thing!). This version of the Goliath is armed with a Rotary Autocannon 5, four Extended Range Medium Lasers, and four Machine Guns (two mounted to the rear).

Who knows if they'll add them in. There are a few by this time period. The Goliath, Scorpion, and Tarantula.

What do you work in? And how do you render the powdered finish?

The top image you posted should be just fine... I'll need a little time to get life out of the way, but this is definately on my list of awesome things to awesomize.

I primarily use trueSpace 6.6. Unfortunately it looks like after MicroSoft puirchased the program, they killed off the website and stopped supporting it. But a simple search can reveal a few places to get v7.6 for free (and its legit!).

I also know a bit of how to use 3D Studio Max and I have 3DS 2010. As for the "powder finish" that's just the base surface material with no gloss or anything applied to it. Matt finish if you have a preset. The lighting is a simple Ambient Occlusion light setup to show off the details with a mid range of shadow and highlight.

A little time and practice and some guidance and I'm sure you can. There are a number of free programs, a great community behind each one, and tons of tutorials to get you on your way.

And yet I think it's missing something. Just not quite sure what...

Images removed.

Alright, figured I'd upload a series of progress shots to show you guys the model from start to finish. The first state is blocking out the basic shapes (just like with drawing or sculpting).

This is based mostly on the images of the figuring you can find at CamoSpecs.com.

From there I start by detailing the legs. It was as good a place as any to start. Sometimes I'll build from the head down, if I have an idea of where I want to go. The FIRST thing I noticed is how fragile the thing looks. The forward leg joints look like a shot trap the way it's angled. I HAD to change that part.

Not much to see here, just figuring out a design style direction. Modeled out the forward shoulder guards and started adjusting proportions.

Rebuilt the feet and started work on the rear legs. I just copied the front lower legs, but later I'll learn that that doesn't quite fit the design. I end up rebuilding them anyway. I also started detailing the head.

Completed the rear legs and shaped out the back end (not seen in this image). Also started to detail the head and started work on the underside.

Built up the torso and started bulking out the design. There are a number of variants and most of them look like they had weapons tacked onto them. Each version was incredibly asymmetrical and it was difficult to piece down the base model.

Underside detailing, vents, pipework, cooling fans, and armor plates.

Now I've started arming it. The weapons make the variant after all! I was deciding which one I should go with. The original GOL-1H version that was a slow, plodding, undergunned monster, or the reseen GOL-5D. Or possibly some other version of the 'mech. Here I recycled the gun from my M230 chaingun model and started to design a medium laser. I wanted it to look a bit more realistic than a ball turret with a tube sticking out.

This is where I settled on the Rhinemetall laser turret as a design reference. Also adjusted the size of a few items, made the MGs larger and started thinking of detailing the upper half.

At this point I was mostly done. The last parts were pretty much added in a last push to get this model completed. I did the RAC 5 in one go, and detailed the top with some bits of detail. The end result you can see in my starter post.

Another beautiful piece of 3D work here, thanks for sharing it with us! Always have been impressed with your stuff (remember that SL-17 Slayer you built for the Aerotech mod?)

I'd completely forgotten about it until reading this post. It was for a Privateer mod IIRC. I have no idea what became of that project since I lost track of it over the years. I don't even know if that model was any good, much less up to my current standards.

It was for the Aerotech mod for Freelancer. About the time we got that Slayer imported, we noticed we couldn't build any more star systems, even with the help of some decent programmers from another mod team. That left us the Chaos March, basically, and none of the Great Houses. Weapons were terribly hard to translate over, and we eventually let it die.

But the Slayer was gooooood. You want a copy of that model again?

Ah OK, I thought it was something Wing Commander related. Probably all of the WC mods out there for that game.

You still have the model? That would be great! I lost that thing from a Win98 based HDD crash (lost a lot of stuff before upgrading to Win7). You can upload it somewhere and link the model here.

Thanks! I was afraid that the model would have been some horrid mishmash I put together, but you're right, this actually is a pretty passable model. I'll render this out and post it to dA and add a link to the Low-poly thread I started.

-edit-
On second thought, I think I'll create some maps for it first to enhance the detail.
