Battletech started out with a great plot and decent gameplay for its time. Mechwarrior continued the plot and followed up with better gameplay and customization. I think what most people dont realize is that Mechassualt and Mechassualt 2 took a giant leap in perfecting the gameplay aspect of the series. For anyone who has played the campaigns and multiplayers of either game you know the gameplay is great. Some of use like 3rd person and some like 1st. I think to expand to all Mech players you need the option of either. Also the faster paced gameplay, not so much the arcade style of mech one, but the cohesion of Mechassualt 2 would encourage constant play among all players. Comments?

There's no need to get into the idea of "new coke" to get people to play a MW video game; D&D has tried that with 3.5, 4, and now the upcoming 5th edition, and has managed to fracture its playerbase very badly.

MW is, by definition, a game that simulates what it's like to pilot a battlemech from the BTuniverse in combat; and BTU battlemechs are, at the "basement level" very simple to pilot; but there's also reward for players who've been in it for a while.

If MWO manages to simulate this aspect, it doesn't need to be coded as two or three video games.

Besides, I find it scary that people think the proper route to bring people into the BTU lore is to water down the video game, instead of educating them as to why it's cool to play a video game that properly simulates what it's like to pilot a battlemech, as they exist in the BTU.

Less lowering the bar, more helping people over it... it's not that high of a bar.

Even if you have a reactor that takes care of itself, the damage model still isn't as detailed as a real sim, weapons \are just a matter of point and squirt (fairly unrealistic for missiles), and you don't need to worry about the surface you're on even if your mech weights 100 tons. Walk through a river bed? No problem.

from http://www.sarna.net...g_Range_Missile

Long Range Missiles are designed to engage the enemy at great distances at the expense of damage dealt. Adapted towards the profusion of electronic jamming on the battlefield and the effectiveness of current armor designs, these missiles are capable of indirect fire and disperse over a smaller area than Short Range Missiles.

I don't know how you could say the damage isn't realistic when we are dealing with weapons and armors that don't exist. And as for walking through water/mud it was handled quite realistically in Mechwarrior 3 and 4 by slowing your speed depending on how deep you were.

Did the OP seriously use "MechAssault" and "perfecting the gameplay" in the same sentence? Whoa, just whoa... you learn new things every day, even with regards to the degenerative tendencies of mankind... concerning language usage...

And it always gives me an "inner chuckle" if I see people talking about MechWarrior being the next step. Not realizing how hilarious that is as MechWarrior™ was (and is) the RPG spinoff of BattleTech and only the name/label got appropriated for computer games. But let's not go there, down to the levels of MechInsult. For some of us MW4 and some things it did to the franchise were already hard to stomach. So I guess a couple of people on these forums are rather glad MWO is becoming launched for the PC platform and not a console. I certainly am. So we might avoid getting the usual LCD package so popular there. :)

IMO, Mechassault is far removed from the Battletech universe. It only has a few mech designs and names in common with the source material. It could have been it's own game and universe like they are doing with "Reign of Thunder".

It's a good game in the arcade style gameplay it offers.
It's bad as a Battletech/Mechwarrior game

Agreed. You can also nit pick it to death with all its errors about the mechs too. Plus there was the spider thing and the final bad guy in Mechassualt 2. Among many other things. Don't get me wrong, it is fun, but definitely not with the source material all the way, or even close with several things. At its heart, it's an arcade game where bigger is better, faster firing rate is better, and garunteed to win. Or at least 90 percent of the time. Keep it to the PC and all will be good. Console is good for some genres and games, but not for others.

No no no... no MW vs MA threads please. We've already stated that this will be a first-person perspective game. We've also addressed the gameplay speed and operations therein.
