just a result of the original being made back in 1984 when the USSR still existed.

Not knowing that in a few years the USSR would cease to be and the cold war would end is a issue of plot of a lot of things who storylines began in the 80 and late 70s

they were seeing the future of the those decades rather than what we know now.

Heh, some of those significant dates were actually ret-conned in later sourcebooks. In the early universe, as I recall, things like the war actually take place in the 90s at some point.

yeah the editions after 91 trys to retcon it to the Russian federation but now the current story is that it's a AU were the soviets did went kaput in 91 but later went back into power.

The Lyrans got battlemech tech via a commando raid on Hesperus II, the Davions in turn found out about it and bought it off them, the Combine located the Lyrans production facility and raided that to get the tech. House Marik used espionage to convince a disgruntled lyran enginner to defect with the plans, only to have House Laio do the same to them a few years latter.

Also note Crippen Station is huge, with a crew of some 2,000, space yards, orbital factory's and orbital defense stations.
With the earth of this time frame managing to build it in under 15 years. Indicating that earth as of this time has easily ten times the orbital life capacity than we do. Also the US navy built far more Sea Wolf Class subs than we did.
