I used to post under Lyonn but i change my name but I'm one in the same person. Let me share with you my completed MW4 Hunchback model. Its scratch build based Blaars paper plans. I took 89days to build it in plastic then and cast it in resin. Lastly a lick of paint to finish it off because its not finished till its painted.

You can follow my build blog here http://reversedisabled.blogspot.co.uk/ where you can read my ramblings while I'm putting it together.

Its 1/60 scale (the same as armorcast mechs)
18cm tall (7.1inchs for the metric challenged)
All resin and weighs 420grams
This is my 5th scratch built model

How do you do stuff like this???there is a guy in the UK that has like a full 3 lances of mechs 30" tall made out of basal wood..
this is crazy...

OMG......I've been wanting to do something like this for years........

How do you even start?
Whats the cost?
Where do you get the vinal / resin?
Have you ever thought of making a "how I did this" step by step instruction series to help folks like my..

On my blog I talk about the process of making these models. Its can be broken down into 3 parts
  • Making the plans
  • Making the model
  • Making moulds and casting

However I started off with just this;
Some paper plans
Sticky tape
Metal ruler
Stanley knife
0.5mm and .75mm styrene sheets
Plastic glue

To get to were I'm at its the above and;
Adobe Illustrator
Laser cutting service
Loads of epoxy putty
10L pressure pot
Compressor
Drill press
Desk sander
Vacuum pump
Vacuum chamber
Hand tools
Yard of Sand paper
Millions of Plastic cups
RTV silicone
Polyurethane resin
Hot glue gun
Airbush equipment
Thinners
Many kinds of glue
Some where to keep all this toxic stuff safely

Safety glasses
Safety goggles
Face mask
Lab coat
100's of rubber gloves
miles of Paper towels

You're model looks fantastic! Have you ever considered 3d modelling a mech with a program like solidworks or unigraphics and have it made with a rapid prototyper?

I checked your blog.....

I can't seem to find anything regarding
  • Making the plans
  • Making moulds and casting
also when you keep re-scaling do you keep re-making the plastic?

@ Almaras, you may wanna check out this guy's scratch building. Should give you some ideas how to scratch build other models without paper plans.

This guy is building a Catapult from MWO using paper without any paper plans.

Ah sorry seems it was a MW3.org post that had the making/casting process. Tbh theres loads of good info out there if you google for it which will be better written than by me.

This is a good casting guide (opens a PDF);

Just got done reading all this stuff you guy have provided...

Thank you so much!!!

Final questions...

To use pepakura designer I need to get some 3D models...since I'm like you Almeras and my 3D skills SUCK..... how do I go about getting the files I need..
I've asked several artist if they would share their renders with me and I have been told a flat NO..

Is there a place I can go to DL the mechs I want to cast?

Fantastic. It's probably a good thing that there aren't more Battletech/Mechwarrior models out there like this. I'm pretty sure I'd be broke.
