I appreciate winning a PUG where I didn't play my greatest, but was carried by a few great players. I also love the feeling of doing a good job.

It would be cool to be able to congratulate and thank my teammates while the stats are up.

I also think it would be cool to give people some sort of non-performance reward for their performance on their team. Maybe give the first, second, and third (by earned XP) on the winning team a gold, silver, and bronze star, respectively.

These changes would probably be simple to implement:
  • Keep chat active in the post-game lobby
  • Make three little star graphics (~10 minutes of work)
  • Write the simple code to put them next-to the top-three ranked players on the winning team
  • Write the simple code to keep track of a players stars on the website Stats page

Benefits:
  • Post game chat is a great way for PUGs to meet new friends
  • Stars are small motivation to do better (later you could tie in rewards like skins or forum titles)
  • If you only award them to people on owned mechs, it would be a motivation to stop farming trials

What does everyone think? Total level of effort here would probably be less than 8 hours, and it would add some much-needed community and progression to this open beta.

Post game chat is definately a must. I always thought that what we have now is just a placeholder.

Not sure about the stars though. Best players in a team are rewarded with the most XP and money anyway. Having something special that is outside of team performance could negatively affect team play (in pubs of course).

I've seen more than enough people that only play for their K/D. This has cost my team the victory on multiple occasions. And those stars could potentially turn into a similar e-peen meter. Especially if you can buy some special stuff for them.

why only the top 3 on the winning team, what about those times where there is one from the losing team on top, and everyone else below. im am all for the top 3 getting stars.

This. Post-game chat is a definate must, but I'm with BloodGhost on the stars issue. There are already a bunch of players stroking their K/D ratios softly in thier basements, no need to incentivise it anymore that in already is. That said, I'm starting to hit the top 3 on the board with enough frequency to notice it, and often with no kills, or only the one, to my name. Those kill assists and target assists count for a lot. But I don't feel I need a little marker to prove to everyone else that I managed it, the fact of the matter is if this is implemented someone will work out the most efficient way of farming points with as little effort or team impact as possible, and then abuse it to hell. The ranking on the scoreboard at the end is enough, IMO. Screenie your successes, if you need a trophy (won't say I've not).

Fair points BloodGhost and Gaan.

I've seen issues like this in other games before. It sounds like the problem isn't how to give the top-three players some recognition, but rather the problem is how to identify the three players that contributed the most to their teams.

If we don't feel that the current XP system correctly awards the most points to the best contributors, then maybe that system needs to be improved. Otherwise, your arguments about farming 'stars' (yes they need a better name) applies to XP too. Why is farming XP instead of helping one's team acceptable, but trying to farm the most XP to get a star is a bad thing?

To address the point that XP rewards are enough, I have to ask: how do we reward people playing in a mastered mech? They don't need the XP anymore (I know, they can convert it to GXP, but that isn't really reasonable right now), so what are they playing for?

To RedHairDave: Good point. I suppose it could be the top three overall. Players from the losing team don't crack that ranking often, but when they do they should be equally rewarded.
