I know there is "effective range" for weapons, but is it strictly adhered to in game physics?
What I mean is, if I fire a PPC and hit a target past the max range, does it still deal damage?

I ask because, I often see the mechs being hit past the effective range recoil, burst with sparks and light up red where they were hit. If they didn't receive any damage, it is very misleading to see their reaction.

The reason I can't tell if they were damaged or not, is because, no scout mechs are spotting and they are so far away that I'm not able to get a target lock on them, and therefore can't read the damage rating.

Also, the same question goes for the gause rifle or any weapons with range min/max limits.

A solid response would be appreciated.

I do not have a solid response. But as for lasers I know the "max range" that is shown (270m for a medium laser) is the max range to do full damage, not the max damage it will shoot. I believe with medium lasers it will still do damage up to around 500m but at less than full damage. I believe the same is for ballistics like the AC/20.

The PPC I believe will still do damage, but I believe it has a min range of around 100m. Anything below that will do almost no damage. I could be wrong though, I'm not a pro. Look at the MWO wiki, the information on the weapons can be useful.

Check out this thread:

http://mwomercs.com/...s-excel-inside/

The second table lists two values.

A range and a maximum range.

When the distance to your target is x, at 0 < x < range you do 100% damage. From range < x < maximum range you do damage - damage * (x - range) / (maximum range - range) or in words, your damage gradually drops off until it becomes zero. At x > maximum range you deal no damage.

For projectile weapons such as PPC and AC's you will still experience the impact. Laser beams have a limited length and become unfocused and spread out at their maximum.
