Instead of a 3rd person view we get a moving hologram of our mech inside the cockpit.

i hear they did this in mechwarrior 4 but i never played that one so i wouldn't know, the last mech game i played was mechwarrior 2.

But the hologram could be used to orientate the newbies as to which way the legs and torso are facing, it could also be used as a damage report system.
say we have a yellow mech hologram and parts of it change colour like the current damage visual we have (it could also replace the current damage visuals we have :D )

Mechwarrior 4 has full 3rd person as an option. Don't like it, turn it off for 1st person view. It served all previous Mechwarrior games well.

Certain sore losers here in MWO want to change what has always been MW heritage because they lose at previous MW games, and blame 3rd person option. The pathetic thing is, the games allow you to set matches to disable 3rd person, where everyone who joins are locked into cockpits, yet these same people lose anyway, and think that somehow disabling 3rd person for the entire game instead of just some matches will change anything.

I was about to suggest this, but found in on the search. This would be a great way to deal with newbie's torso twist confusion, without implementing a full 3rd person view.

I'd suggest replacing (togglable, but on by default), the damage diagram.

Take a look at Mechwarrior 2 for an example, except instead of the enemy mech, it would be yours with the torso always facing forward.

Looks like Mechwarrior 3 had it too (check the lower right screen)

3rd person was an abomination that Microsoft added into MW3/4 for unknown reasons, much like coolant "flushes". If 3rd person was actually MechWarrior "heritage" then it would have been in MW1/2 as well.

3rd person was avoided in early video games to reduce the polygon count on screen. So don't use that as a logical response to the 3rd person issue. I agree, 3rd person should be avoided in MW:O as it is an FPS (first-person shooter).

The hologram idea is a fantastic compromise in my opinion. You can still see your mech and what it's doing without any of the problems caused by 3rd Person POV.

I agree think the hologram or ala mechwarrior 3 solution is a great idea. I know the minimap shows with the arrow and line but having it actually represented visually through a model will help new players more and it fits in with allowing it be part of the whole immersion cockpit feel. Adds a bit of flair to the cockpit view.

For instance in a hunchback you got those two block panels on the top that say something about ammo but isn't actually dynamic. Could fit them in as a panel you could toggle.

I just realized, the table top game was in 3rd person. What a bunch of hackers!

Exactly.
The main argument in support of 3rd person views is that it'll help players see the relation between their torso and their legs. Using a hologram damage indicator, that's animated and shows leg & Torso position, will solve this "problem" while completely eliminating all the advantages that a 3rd person view would give.

Actually, I'd say that the TT Game was more of an "Omnipresent View" as you could see all of the 'Mechs (Friendly or otherwise) equally.

Instead of having hologram of my mech I wish to have holo of an targeted mech. There's not much of time in a firefight to recognise which leg or arm to shot. I've got this knowledge not long ago, yet sometimes I continue to confuse them.
