See? See?!? This is what happens when movies take the hacksaw to classic narratives. An important character is blanked from existence, and in his place all people can remember is a rubbish movie that we should all be forgetting. And so we end up with missing context, such as Gimli's insistence that no one tosses him but his brother (and the hilarious scene in the book where Legolas insists "just once" until Gigli breaks it up), leaving Gimli's later comment "and don't tell the elf" falling flat. They skip over the entire arc with Gigli helping Gandalf active the Stone of Knowledge and explain why so little time has passed for him while researching the Ring, while outside years pass. Also, without Gigli, they had to have someone else, namely the troubled Boromir, get shot full of arrows at the end of Fellowship (sorry, spoilers, but you really should have read them by now) and then they had to invent an entire new character to cover Boromir's later appearances ("It's his brother! Who looks just like him!")

I'm not saying the whole weight of Hollywood's blunders fall on your shoulders. But you are at least partly to blame for continuing to spread this travesty.
