They can, but Stalkers (except for 3F) only have 60 degree torso twist, so they are vulnerable in a brawl.

For long and short I would go with a Stalker 5m/5s Load it with 3 LRM 20's and 5-6 medium lasers. you should be able to fit 7 or 8 tons of ammo and fill the rest with DHS. pop on an XL 300 engine which will give you 57.1 kph.

Pretty good short range, very good long range. I ran this build for a little bit, worked out great.

Centurion*, Hunchback*, Cat, Phract, Awesome, Stalker, Atlas

* Both can carry Gauss or LRMs for long range and a mix of lasers or SRM for close.

I personally like my CN9-AL a lot, SRM6 for a heavy close range punch, medium pulse in the chest and a large laser in the arm. I can fight on every distance.
