So, Any Plans For A Real Assault Mode?

Because what we have now is nothing more than TDM.

You know...

Timed match.
2 teams.
1 base.
One team defends, the other attacks.

If the attackers kill all defenders (or cap the red square, I guess), they win that round.
If the defenders hold the fort until the timer hits 0 or kill all attackers, they win that round.
Then they switch roles.
If the new attackers can cap or kill everything faster than the first team, they win. If the defenders hold out until the timer runs down, it comes down to a points system which covers both rounds.
The timer for the second round is either the full match time, or the time it took for the first attackers to win.

There's a possibility that what I've described is going to be "Dropship Mode", but the reality that came after the sweet, sweet words about Conquest has me less than enthusiastic.

Better yet, take a page from the book of Unreal Tournament 99' and add some objectives in the middle.

Interesting idea for 8-men games, but to make it work in PUG games I think they have to lower the round time or add higher rewards.

In Assault mode, the base shouldn't be a cap but instead a 'real' destructible base with hitpoints and automated turrets.

Defend matches and Assault matches would be cool - forcing the def / attack roles at start of game.

Not sure I approve of "rounds".
Where d'ya get that idea? World of Warcraft?

Add in tanks, battleships and aircraft while at it. Radar stations also a possibility.

Tanks and other stuff are great but that might be asking too much. Adding a destructible base is something PGI should be able to implement easily. This eliminates those annoying 'stealth ninja cap' by 1 or 2 lights. Destructible base also adds immersion to the game and adds something fresh besides all the 'capture this and that' mode we have right now.

I like the idea of reversing roles Cheese! This would be fun. so long as we can repair between drops.

Of course. There'd be no sense in dropping to attack if half your team was destroyed :)

I was thinking this would be the only true assault as well. You can even have some base defenses. It makes the bases meaningful and allows for different tactics based on various base layouts and map location. They just have to make TDM actually TDM (not assault without basecap rewards) with some mechanism to prevent last mech from hiding, or having to chase a light for hours to end it. Then they need to re-evaluate the reward system for Conquest so it's not TDM. Perhaps no rewards for kills/assists but increase rewards for captures/resources. And maybe looser only gets half of their resource reward, so teams don't just go farming by mutual seize fire agreements (these are just random ideas, I know they need a lot of polish). We would then have 3 solid game modes that actually work on current maps. Throw in some more day-night-weather variations of the maps, stabilize the build, and it will start looking like a marketable title without much in the way of additions. Great topic OP.

I nice variation could be: Defenders cannot respawn, Assaulters can respawn, the defender team is always destroyed at the end. The victory would be awarded to the team destroying more assaulters before being annihilated.

Of course defenders should have an advatageous position on map in order to make things more interesting.

That would make it more of a "wave defence" game type. I like it. Whoever can hold out the longest against an endless stream of attackers would win.

sounds more like campaign mode not just assault.

It is assault as it is now. Both teams are assaulting each others position. Assault has no defined defender or attacker.

Just... please no "infinite respawns" or whatever.

The 4 ships for Dropship mutator, or some other very limited respawn (a few mechs per player, maybe 32 total mechs per team per match or whatever.)

I like the idea overall (and wish we had more clear attack / defend modes at any rate)

Just... don't want to see this game devolve into the same "die, respawn, die" mindless zerg gameplay typical of most "respawn" game modes.

100% agreed. Perhaps your 4 "selected" mechs would be spawnable, but no more.

What are you 6 or something?
And assault is assault. That is 2 teams attacking each other, which is kind of what assault means.
