I was searching for a while and haven't found a definitive answer on what happens when you score critical hits on an opponents engine in MWO. By what I've seen it would just increase their repair bill but now that repair bills are gone does criting the engine have no effect?
If there is no real effect then so be it, but if getting three crits destroys the engine I might look into making a crit seeking build. So does anyone know what actually happens with an engine crit?

3 crits kills the crab.

other than that, nothing really.

that is not true.

never lost a Gauss without losing the limb? it died to crits.

You're missing the main thrust...

Engine crits. Yes, there are crits, losing weapons is the most noticeable... however, engine crits currently have no effect.

The only engine-crit like bit in the game right now is losing the mech to destruction of a side torso with an XL equipped.

It is true. Engine critical hits in Tabletop were damage that the engine could suffer directly. That means you didn't actually have to kill the 'mech's center torso internals to kill the 'mech - you just needed three critical hits on the engine. Those aren't in MWO at this time (they do have a placeholder where if you lose a side torso while running an XL the 'mech dies, but that's not a critical hit implementation - an MWO 'mech does not die without reducing the internals of the CT to 0 (with any engine) or a side torso in the case of an XL engine.

I do hope they get put in though. Gyro crits too please. :D

Engine crit is in, just not like Tabletop

Engine have 15HP, shared across all torso section if using XL engine

15 points of total damage from critical hits to the engine to ANY torso section would destroy the engine.

Currently there's no repair cost
Currently unlike table top, partially damaged engine do not generate additional heat or reduce movement rate

Not true currently. As previous poster have said, there are no working engine crits currently (they are turned off) but you do die when side torso is destroyed if you have XL engine.

Engine damage (critical or otherwise) has no effect in MWO at the moment. Only losing you CT or (in the case of XL engines) a side torso has any effect but that's caused by damaging the internal structure of the torso, not the engine.

Your engine can be hit, it takes damage like any item, but that damage currently has no effect, and you cannot die from your Engine being reduce to 0 HP at the moment.

Prior to the removal of R&R, having your engine HP reduced increased your repair bill, and the devs mentioned CASE reducing this repair bill by preventing damage from an ammo crit migrating to CT and reducing engine HP or something.

So, to sum this up: Uh, wait... what? oO

There seems to be a mostly consensus that engine crits do nothing.

So to kill a stock Atlas DC through its center torso I have to do 94 damage-armor plus 64 damage-internals (totalling 158)?
Crikey... I was hoping that a naked CT would soon cause death. It seems going for a side torso (64+42 = 106) is a bit better tactic. If they have an XL then you get a kill. If they don't you still knock off half their guns.

Am I right?

in tabletob engine damage also gives you extra heat, not so in mwo.
