I have a build for my Direwolf. It is:

Right Arm: DWF-Prime
3 C-ER Med Lasers
1 C-ER Lrg Laser
5 tons C-U-AC 20 ammo

Right Torso: DWF-W
Ultra AC 20

Head: DWF-Prime
nothing

Center Torso: DWF-Prime
C-Dbl Heat Sink

Left Torso: DWF-B
Ultra AC 20

Left Arm: DWF-Prime
3 C-ER Med Lasers
1 C-ER Lrg Laser
5 tons C-U-AC 20 ammo

Right Leg: DWF-Prime
C-Dbl Heat sink

Left Leg: DWF-Prime
Nothing

What can I do better?
Am I going about this all wrong? Or do I have an OK build and I just need the team to follow my direction?

Since the Whale is rather immobile i would keep distance from close range Weaponry.
Gauss fits better, Large pulses instead of Er Larges, only 4 Meds.
But hey, maybe in your Tier Bracket it could work.

2 Ultra 20s will trigger ghost heat if you don't space out your shots by half a second or more. Even then it's going to be very hot. It isn't worth exposing yourself to fire 2 ERLL either.

Once the Direwolf is engaged it is difficult to run away without taking heaps of damage.

I would probably go with something like this to bring a UAC20 and lasers: DWF-B It still runs hot, but will be more manageable.

Yeah I'm just trying to learn the game and become a better player. Been off and on since 2014 and I'm buckling down and getting serious now.

Smurphy's doesn't show it (There are 2 DHS in the torsos that can be taken out)

But you can do this build with the DWF-B

Right Side Torso - 2 UAC10's 6T ammo
Left side torso - 1 UAC20 4T ammo
Left Arm - 3 ERML
The rest of tonnage in armour and DHS to suit you fancy.

Engage at medium range 400-500 m with the 10's and ERML, but only if exchange is favourable

Once the teams close wade it screaming and firing everything! I put 10's on button 1, 20 on right, and erML on middle. Click 1, then 2, then 3, then 1 then 2 with about .5 second spacing - this means after firing the erml the uacs will be ready for another round. Inside 2 seconds you can deliver 101 points of damage! Its hot, be smart. You'll win one on ones with a king crab, but will still crumble under a lance worth of firepower. Once you push you are committed.

Gauss and lasers still works, other good builds include 4 uac10, 2uac10 3uac5 and 5 uac 5's
Some smurfy links included, others you need to find on your own

Done up a few builds to consider:
DWF-B
DWF-A
DWF-PRIME
And a couple variations of
DWF-S(1)
DWF-S(2)
DWF-S(2.5)
in case it's included in the ala carte pack that I'll soon be unadvisedly spending too much money on. Are these worth it, or should I bite my tongue and wait a month and a half for my Kodiaks instead?

With LPL range module and targeting computer it deals full damage up to 688 m.

Heat isn't too bad grouping LPL's in sets of 2 for a full 78 pts of damage.

You can't alpha but as long as you pace yourself and maintain decent trigger discipline your heat will be "manageable".

Welp, just ala carte'd Dire Wolves. I haven't taken them into actual combat yet, but I'm hoping that I don't regret my purchases yet

My Direwolf that has been most successful, i.e., not sucky, is pretty basic.

Prime(I) for 30% credit bonus
4 Ultra-AC10.
Targeting Comp1--for zoom bonus, speed bonus, crit I guess
DWF-S left and right torso for jump jets--this allows you to get up the half-hill in Canyon.
Advanced Zoom module

I tried running no DWFS because the jump jets take up 2 tons each. If you're doing well, you can run out of ammo on this build. But a direwolf is the most sluggish assault in the game. You can get over a lot of annoying bumps and humps with jump jets. With one JJ you can get over some annoyances. With 2, you can get into real life tactical spots on bog or mining colony or wherever. I think it opens up a whole other avenue with the mech and shouldn't be underestimated.

I heard the Direwolf described as a turret. And that's appropriate. It can't take a huge beating like some other 100 tonners. You get into a position and spew until you or him drops. Being long range doesn't suit the direwolf which is too slow to head poke and it can't fit an ams easily. Being short range doesn't suit it because stuff can just outrun it. Medium range, team friendly, is its sweet spot.
