Some people say that it is too dangerous to put gauss on side torsos, why? And if it is, how about the other ballistics.

Gauss in side torsos is ok, just combined with IS XL reactors it can be painful. Critical hits on gauss rifles let them explode for even more internal damage. Theoretical the same goes for ammunition, just the chances of that exploding are far lower.

For standard engines there is no reason not to put gauss rifles into side torsos.

On December 13th patch they increased the IS gauss rifle health from 5 to 10 so its a lot less likely to blow up. Sure its still bit risky to combine IS XL engine and side torso gauss, but its nowhere near as suicidal anymore as it used to be.

If you use a standard engine, putting a CASE will help reduce the risk of the explosion going into your center torso.

In MWO, there is no point in putting a CASE in with an IS XL engine as you will die regardless.

(In Battletech; yes the mech would stop functioning. However, it would preserve 3/4ths of the engine; Significantly reducing repair cost and time. Actually it allows repairs to be possible as otherwise, there wouldn't be much left of the 'Mech in some cases and in most others, you'd have to completely replace the engine which in the case of assaults, could be around 12 million cbills. Unlike MWO engines aren't universal, an XL 300 for an assault is 4 times the cost of an XL 300 for a light. The CASE would also save the pilot's life, who would almost certainly die otherwise. Thus why you will find CASE on stock XL engine builds...even though CASE is worthless for IS XL engines in MWO.)

Gauss ammo doesn't explode. In fact the best thing you can do when you take a gauss rifle is crit pad the gauss rifle with the ammo. Fill that component with it, in half tons of it if you don't have the weight, but do have the slots. It less, though not by much, the chance of a critical hit destroying the weapon and usually quite a bit of you with it.

True, I should have been more precise in my statement. I was actually talking about non-gauss ammunition, which can explode the same way as a gauss rifle on a critical hit. Just with a lower Chance than the gauss rifle.
