I was so happy that I can finally play my childhood game...

Oh how I wish I could pull a solution out for you. Honestly I think we need more information.
But that aside, I suggest that you also make your requests in this section. Much more tech-savvy people linger there which may be able to better assist you. They would respond faster to this sort of issue.

Been having the same trouble here in Australia.
I start the launcher and it just sits there until the error message comes up or I get sick of it and use the task manager to kill it.
Anyone have any idea what is wrong?

There are several threads scattered about that describe this problem.
One of the key similarities was that everyone was using an AMD processor and had AVAST anti-virus installed.
Uninstalling AVAST, restarting, Client works, reinstall AVAST, client still works.
