Scenario: Frozen City / They - High City Us - Low City
- They set of LRM encampment and send out lights to target & TAG.

My team: No one does anything but play "chase the scout" while they bring the rain...

I inform them I'm going to go do what I do best in this scenario... I flank and annoy so they can crest the ridge unmolested. I pop out of Jenner's run and dive right into the LRM spammers and they all move to engage me...

I tell my team to CHARGE NOW!

I keep the opposing team busy long enough for them to move en mass... but no support fire comes and in short order I get to feel red-hot "prison love" as 3/4th of their team takes turn violating me.

I drop into spectator expecting to see my team engaged in the fits of battle... Nope.

My team is chasing a scout around like a perverse mechanized Conga-Line...

Sigh.. At least I ended the mission with top damage and one kill before watching my team die one by one from LRM enemas. :)

Don't you just love it when everyone ignores you?

lol. I think the big problem is the fact that a person with more damage and kills will get more c-bills. This is seems to encourage people to get greedy. So when they see a light they think "easy kill" even though its really just a distraction and they die early. Everyone on the same team needs to work like a team and not work like people just on a team.

Self sacrifice is useful if you know your team is going to take advantage. Otherwise it's just a glorified suicide.

Far too many people suffer target vision. Still to this day, even with experienced teams, sending a lone scout in to die is a very valid tactic for splitting the group in prep for a coordinated rush.

The other problem is SOOOOOO many mechs out there for configured for 270m or less, so they view shooting at the target they can hit as the only valid thing to do while LRMs are raining down. So they figure its either sit around being useless ( in their mind ) or shoot the one target they can see... they choose shoot. What makes it even worse is, 70% of the time, that light mech is an *****, not a distraction, so its often a free kill. It's just when that target turns out to actually be a distraction, that "free" kill becomes very expensive.

To answer your question though... well, you already did. That light mech all of your team was chasing... well, thats an example of good self sacrifice.

Had a game just like this. Buddy and i flanked the enemy force via tunnel on frozen city. Enemy is entrenched on the south side and doesn't notice us, our team entrenched on the north side.

We swing around behind the enemy and open fire predictably their whole team swings round on us and.... nothing from our team. we both die and cycle through our "teammates" who all are sitting so still on the other side of the ill you'd think they were all afk.

/sigh

Pugging I almost never sacrifice myself for exactly the reason you stated. There are a few exceptions, like getting mauled on your own base to buy time in preventing a cap, but they are few and far between. I will on occasion take one for the team, but they are rare.

Now in my Atlas for example, I will stand and fight often when best interested says not to,hoping my teammates take advantage of me soaking up the damage. Sadly, most of the time they dont.

Oh, how I know that feeling.

Frozen: I rush the tunnel in an Awesome 9M, with 385 standard engine and full armor, capping, drawing their attention. Keeping a dragon, a hunchy and an atlas busy for about 2 minutes at least.
"ATTACK" I write. Not really happening.

What sometimes helps is to take command on the map. Seems people like your stuff more when its phrased with a shiny "Commander" tag.... lol

Sadly it's not something one can really qualify before engaging in... :)

"Excuse me team?... I'm about to flank the enemy and disrupt their Feng-Shui. By a show of hands who of you will be assisting me in this endeavor?"

I throw my lights on the pyre all the time. Doesn't always pay out, sometimes weaving the backline means getting killed right away. But I tend to scout aggressively and in a scrap will intentionally draw notice, fire, and rain. Better my Com than something more deadly on my team. Three guys trying to take me down means three less reds bothering to watch what my team's doing.

We were on Alpine last night. As luck would have it, I rolled out my LRM boat catapult. I set up on the ridge and asked if someone would stick close by to provide some anti-light support. As the enemy crested into the valley, I let 'em fly. Killed 3 of them with missile fire, and noticed my entire team decided to rush in for the thrill kill. A single raven pops up and proceeds to start tapping me. No problem, just notify team right? Nothing. Uhhh..hey guys...little help.... Nope. One guy looked *right at me*, then turned around and kept walking away (he had zero damage). The entire team just waded headlong into a cluster down below and just let me slowly get whittled away by this raven (bad fit at that). I mean come on... it wasn't like I was mile away or anything, they could bloody SEE ME and I was screaming at them to at least give me a courtesy shot. I killed one more before finally getting picked off by the raven. I then had to spectate the next 5 minutes of pure chaos as we, with a 4+ lead, got chewed apart from *friendly fire*. Where was I going wit this?

Back before capping became a reviled and useless activity and the Raven wasn't the best fighter in the game, I used to base rush almost every single match, and probably 80% of the time, it would cause the enemy to split in half. You just had to stand on the base for 15 seconds or so, and it was enough that your team could rush and win against a fragmented foe.

Sadly, still sorta works.

That said, at 140km/h and lag shielded, it wasn't suicide.

*Raises Hand* I volunteer you to an ignominius death that you will rush to on the assurance of my assistance and/or avenging wrath right up to the point you engage, I am distracted by a butterfly, or I remember that I really need to walk into a wall.

I've done that many a time. While sneaking around to cap a base, we've had several mechs all make it to the base at once and then I've had the lighter mechs stay on base to cap, while I've ordered the heavy and assault mechs to form a wall and go out to face the enemy. If they refuse to go, as sometimes PUG's don't listen, I'd go out myself and stall them. Sure I'd get blown up, but the stalling tactic works and it kept them all around me to where they destroyed me but my team won due to base cap.

If you know how and when to use base capping and stall tactics to keep them from getting past you, you can hold them off long enough for the self-sacrifice. The best is the losing team telling me I suck because I didn't put up a fight and then I can respond back "I wasn't trying to destroy you all, but to delay you. And you fell for it and my team won. Have a nice day!"

I can't even count the times we missed each other on Caustic, I've told everyone to cap and rushed back to our base, holding the enemy for good 2 minutes only to find the rest of teh team in slow mechs marching back when the score-board showed up...

Turns out they needed too as they were mercilessly torn apart by a now numerically superior force that was able to flank them.

so yeah karma's a *****... i just wish she'd show up when I was still alive occasionally.
