It really is a joke. It's who can drop the most. I was a little shocked when they said a "banner" was to go to 15 players. What is a banner? Throw some MC out there or something. What a lame prize. For people with work, school, and families, this "tournament" is not doable, nor would I or many other players run for 72 hours straight.

The real joke is that they announce this event on the day it starts o0
A lead time of 7 days is a minimum for such an event IMHO

Plus the server(s) are having a ball of a time sending many a player teleporting up into the stratosphere and back, making aiming for euro players thanks to lag-shooting even more strenuous, not to mention its a clear and very indicative competition advantage all the US/CAN players have got with that as it makes things like shooting off legs with Gauss/ERPPC of 150kph running lights easily possible while most europeans can only dream of such repeatable aim-shots.

Also adding (although this is merely suspicion) : ELO seemingly gives you really, really, really bad (and I mean bad as in : "hey guys, can anyone tell me how to steer this?" "what does this do?" bang...shoot teammate in the back and all that oh so funny shenanigans) teams the further you get up the ladder, giving even the top 3 of any ladder a hard time achieving anything (as I had to experience myself: do 1422 damage, kill 4, having opened armour on nearly any given enemy and still my mates went down like it was payday for whores ... )

So, PGI, for your next try getting Data and some Cash in one go :

more setting up time all around
-Announcement on the forums, a week or more in advance proper
-Proper weighting of skill vs. time invested (its plain bollocks comparing good guys to account sharers ... and we all know and see that its being done)
-Netcode (either make it straight without lagcomp, so everyone got his ping to shoot at and not some wildly fluctuating crosscut of all pings -or- have it seperated in EU/US as to negate the not so small advantage US/CAN players have ... on another plus: whining about lagshielded lights might get reduced by at least 50% if US and EU players get separated at least for such tournaments)

TL;DR:

Hipshot ...
Not bad ...
But you can do better, PGI, easily ...

Gentlemen, grind on

Yeah, it's not so much a contest of skill, as it is a contest of who can sleep the least.

Disappointing.

The proper term is "poopsocking."

The more you know.

Based on the current standings, players in the top 100 (er... top 25 for each mech class) are earning an average of 1.28 points points per match played, with a standard deviation of 0.25 points. My interpretation of these numbers is that "skill", on average, counts for less than half of your score than total time spent griding points. If someone just plays twice as much as you, then even if your skil is 0.5 points/game better, they quickly surpass your score by earning 0.7 points/game for twice as long.

To score a game like this, and have the scores reflect actual skill rather than free time available, you must cap the total number of games that are counted. If you took the first X games played, say 30, that would be ideal (although with Elo in place there would still be imbalance). Taking the best X games out of all games played would be a compromise that would still favor grinding but would at least be an improvement from the current system.

Played Friday then couldn't play Saturday or Sunday. Not really a challenge but more of a "who's got the most time on their hands" game.

Would love to play in a real tournament though *wink*

I got in the top 25, which is all I was shooting for. I got 8 hours of sleep each night and worked 8 hours on Friday. I have no respect for anyone with more games than me. I ran into most of them and killed all of them with very few exceptions. Most of them were trying to cap the base alone, or doing suicide runs so they could disconnect faster.

I always tried. I usually got 2+ kills, 5+ spotting assists for lrms if we had any, and 5+ kill assists. If we capped base, then I was there. My damage was almost always 300-600. My final win/loss ratio was over 2:1. If there was another light on my team I had his back. It was great practice and I loved it. I even learned a few things.

I hope PGI has some good data from me about the new ELO system. I also hope they make a real tournament next time.
