Hello everyone, I'm new to the BattleTech world and thought I'd give MechWarrior Online a try. I've downloaded and installed the client from the website, which is supposed to run the patcher that downloads the current game files. However, whenever I attempt to run it, it crashes immediately after receiving User Account Control approval (which enables running programs as an administrator in Vista) with the following error, which Microsoft says is associated with the .NET Framework:

Product: MechWarrior Online Problem: Stopped Working Date: 2/21/2013 9:21 AM Status: Report Sent

Description: Stopped working
Problem Event Name: CLR20r3
Problem Signature 01: mechwarrioronline.exe
Problem Signature 02: 1.2.0.0
Problem Signature 03: 50527a51
Problem Signature 04: MechWarriorOnline
Problem Signature 05: 1.2.0.0
Problem Signature 06: 50527a51
Problem Signature 07: 29
Problem Signature 08: 6d
Problem Signature 09: System.TypeInitialization
OS Version: 6.0.6002.2.2.0.256.6 Locale ID: 1033

Of course, I e-mailed MWO Support when I couldn't fix the problem with the Microsoft-Fix-It auto-repair utility (Installing and Uninstalling Programs, including a reigstry repair operation), but despite their quck reponse, all MWO Support could suggest was re-downloading the client with my anti-virus and firewall disabled. I followed their advice, but the same error occured even after multiple attempts.

I've already tried uninstalling-rebooting-reinstallling Mechwarrior Online and both first repairing and then reinstalling the .NET framework as suggested on the Microsoft forums. I've also used msconfig to do a diagnostic mode boot, then a safe mode boot, then a diagnostic safe mode boot, and the problem still occurred every time. I even created two other user accounts, both a standard and an administrator to test if they could run the game, but neither could.

The next step I tried was downloading first .NET 4.0 and then .NET 4.5 to see if the game needed a newer version in order to run, but the error persisted. In that same train of thought, I checked to see what versions of the .NET Framework my computer has on it, but the Update History only listed 1.1, 3.5, 3.5 SP1, and 4.0 client plus their respective updates.

I'm running Windows Vista Business SP2 with all the latest updates according to Windows Update, which is set to provide updates for Windows and other programs. Can someone tell me how to get MWO and .NET to co-operate or what specific .NET Framework version(s) MechWarrior Online needs in order to run so that I can install them? I would of course love to hear any other suggestions you all might have as to how to solve this problem, and thank you for your time.

I'm on Vista Ultimate SP2 with .NET 1.0, 1.1, 2.0, 3.0, 3.5, and 4.0 installed. I think MWO wants 4.0 (though PGI has chimed in with "use whatever the latest version is" on at least one occasion).

However, Vista likes to be incredibly obstructive any time you try to tell the machine to actually do something useful. So, disable UAC (in fact, I'd turn off as many of the babysitters as you can) and tell windows to run the patcher as an administrator (right-click the icon and select "run as administrator"). I'm not sure if it'll help, but it can't hurt if you haven't tried it already.

Thanks for replying! I hadn't thought of disabling UAC, to be honest, since I've found Vista Business to be remarkably stable compared to the other versions of this OS, and I've already turned off most of "babysitters" (good name for them btw), with UAC being a rare exception. Nevertheless, I tried switching it off but got the same crash and error report as before. I also manually downloaded both .NET 4.0 and 4.5 and the made sure to fully update them (as of this post), but that didn't fix the problem either.

Does anyone know if the launcher, patcher or any other part of the game actually requires Internet Explorer in order to run? I don't use IE right now, relying on a combination of a very restricted Opera 12 for general browsing and Firefox 18 for accessing trusted sites (like this one). In fact I actually disabled Internet Explorer on my system (not allowed through the firewall and the folder in Program Files deleted) to prevent a virus infection from spreading (I was successful too). I hope I can get this problem fixed soon; I already signed up for this game, and I'd love to be playing it.

Still unable to run the patcher and start playing the game. Is there a link to download the full game files from somewhere? I've been reading the forums and saw that some other people got around similar errors by running the game with a "no patch" extension to the shortcut. However, since I haven't even been able to install the game in the first place because of this problem, I would need to download the current version of the full game somwehow in order to be able to play. I currently have only the 1.5 MB containing the patcher that the downloaded executable from the website puts on your computer. Also, I read somewhere else that Tuesdays used to be patch days, so if I'm really lucky, maybe PGI will have seen all the other problems the patcher has been giving people, and this will all be fixed tomorrow anyways.

First off, Patches have changed from a small one every 2 weeks to a big one once a month, so there won't be another one till sometime in march.

Have you tried cleaning up your registry? I've heard that recently there's been a problem with the patcher recently and that deleting all the old .dll files from the failed mwo download should fix it. Even if that's not the case, there's no harm in cleaning up your registry anyway

Well, thanks to the new downloading system I can finally get the patcher to start running! :(

However, I now have a new problem! ;) As soon as I have started the installation and it actually begins installing Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 redistributable, it crashes with an error "0x800b0101" saying that a required certificate is not within the timeframe specified in the file or displayed on the system clock.

Does anyone know of a fix or workaround for this issue?

Nevermind... ;) I looked around in the forums and found this; it has finally enabled me to successfully install the game! :(

MWO: Forums - Crash at Login? This may help!

Well, I spoke too soon; now I have a new problem! :( I can successfully install the game and start the patcher program. However, when I click on the "PATCH" button it will try to download the patch, complete the download, and then crash to desktop with no error messages. After that, if I restart the patcher and try to click the "PATCH" button again it fails and gives me the following error message.
