I played Heros of Newearth since beta and it was the same thing, matchmaking started off quite poor with long que times and gradually got better. They are still refining it today (4+ years later).
So, cool your nuts and just play the game. A year from now you'll be grasping for the smallest things to b!@#^ about because the game is going to be so F@#$ing good!

Any time i have ever wanted to play a game competitively i've joined a team and entered tournaments.
I dont agree with stomping noobs with a group so that should be out,
but srsly, i dont want every single day of MWO to be a hardcore tournament, its a relaxing hobby not a daily lifetime tournament competition.

But we still need drop tonnage limits even if we don't have weight class matching anymore the total tonnage difference between two teams should not be more than 50 tons.

Basically the longer the 'Searching' is churning away the looser the weight/class balancing gets. The system simply gives up and gives you best guess within a band.

Seems to me though, that reason for those creazy rounds are 4-mans who only run 4 3L or 4 D-DC. So mostly fine, and not more misbalanced than before, but worse matches can sometimes happen. Have your little group with trebuchets without even basic skills, and be thrown against 250 ton bigger team, with only top tier builds in it. Oh well, we did beat the ravens though, they were just plain bad, we outplayed and capped their base... : )
Edit:maybe add some intel data from enemy team in the score screen? Do not list exact mechs, but give weight class in games? So at least some planning is possible how to encounter much heavier or lighter force. No need for that in 8-mans, that's the scout's job, but would make sense in randoms.
