Still think more options are always better, though.

It shouldn't be hard, you're smart after all.
So that the game is less fun because you have to grind in order to put together a remotely competitive mech?
Honestly, I don't know. So that they can charge more MC for mechs and say it's because you get all this crappy equipment with them?

But seriously, it's just a money sink.

or you can go to a junkyard and get a stripped chassis for ~10% of the price tops.

Or... you just buy the frame and start from there. Like all the modifieds do....(And even then I know alot of guys who build the frame from scratch.....there are few rules other than the role cage and support.)
I would hope in the future of death dealing machines you would be able to buy the frame only, and not all the crappy components.
This would be analagous to buying a desktop from dell, only to remove all the crappy components and the put in your own.
If I'm trusting my life to a giant hunk of metal, I want the best money can buy, and won't pay for cut rate crap from a 'dealer' who sells me the stock 'Atlas'.

I have three Stalkers and an Atlas. However, I am having a lot of fun in the trial Catapult K2 (to the point that I could start unlocking the basic enhancements). I am now saving up to buy one and I will probably keep it stock (eventually, I will figure out what the MG's are for).

Price of stripped 'mech = price of stock variant - half the value of all stock variant equipment
So, the end price is equal to purchasing the regular stock variant, then stripping it of engine, weapons, armor, etc. and selling all that equipment (at half price). That's about what I do now anyway. It would save time and lower the initial cost, so instead of saving over 8 million c-bills for a TBT-3C, you only need to save up about 5 million c-bills.

Actually, this suggestion I find to be valid.
I usually, (despite hating the grind to get a mech with an XL engine), would have rejected a suggestion about buying a stripped-down chassis, but this idea does make sense. That way, if you know you don't want any of the stock parts, you can save yourself a bit of time and just buy the chassis. I think it would be rare for players not to want an XL engine though (but it could happen), and the LBX isn't cheap either. Other than those two parts, which are rare on most 'mechs, this idea would work perfectly.
As to whether PGI would buy into this...
I dunno, but I wouldn't get my hopes up.
