I think that any game can benefit from eSports, and Mechwarrior in particular could benefit quite alot from eSports. I just spent a weekend at MLG Providence and the hall was packed with fans watching Starcraft II, League of Legends, Halo and Call of Duty. There were world class players (yeah Huk, Boxer, etc!), corporate sponsors, the only thing they were missing were people hawking hotdogs and cotton candy. People loved watching their favorite players playing their favorite games at a very high level.

Halo and Call of Duty are observed by viewing what the player views in the first person. Makes your head spin. Starcraft II and League of Legends both have observer modes and commentators can freely view any portion of the battlefield at a more viewer-friendly pace. This sort of viewing, combined with knowledgeable commentators, makes for a very entertaining experience.

I suggest that some form of observer mode be implemented as soon as it is reasonable. eSports is a concept that is rapidly gaining traction, and facilitating MWO's entry into that arena can only be good for the game!

Confident some option for a free-floating camera and a commentary mode will be implemented at some point. I mean, we kinda need it for the annual Solaris tournaments they are going to hold, right? :)

Mech Football (U.S.)
53 mechs on a team
Game Field Mech Bays only hold 46 per team.
Only eleven mechs on the field per team at a time

Team can have a Max of:
5 Assaults
11 Heavies
21 Mediums
16 Lights

Team can have lighter weight classes for a heaver slot, aka the drop 1 Assault to have 12 heavies

The Ball, Elemental Suit with Two Power Claws and Jumpjets (& One Man on death row in it) if he can survivie 7 Touchdowns he can get off)

Due the non-military use the following Equipment is for use:
All Mech Must have Fission, Fuel Cell, or I.C.E. Engines
All Mech Must have Full Industrial Armor (16pt per ton X 0.67 = Round Down to whole number)
All Mech Must Standard Industrial Internals (AKA 20% of the mechs weight)
All Mech Must have Heavy Gyros
Single Effect Heat sinks only
Hand to Hand or Ammo based weapons only

You are a funny thinker, I like that. Too many would only scoff at your idea. I may scoff, yet I ponder the fun it would be to play.LOL

Not a big fan of MLG.. in their quest to even the playing field for competitions.. the games loose their flavor.

im sure this is a side bar topic but meh, I said it.

Some of the SC2 replays are really fun to watch. I saw the recent GSL of MMA vs DRG and man, epic 7 game series right there. The biggest problem with eSports is of course the obvious, games become old and obsolete so it's hard to maintain a steady following. Starcraft manages to make itself an exception. I will say this though, games like EVE and MWO that are in continual update cycles may become the answer to eSports's biggest... structural flaw. Who knows.

So just so I'm clear, because I'm old and my brain has taken one too many tequila PPCs to function correctly anymore.

People sit around and watch other people play the game they want to play...on purpose?

*having a flashback to when I was 16 and sat at my friend's house watching him struggle through the TSR Gold box series*

Mech hockey, at least that is internatioanlly more viable than the rather exotic football of the US flavour type. Exotic for non-americans, that is... :) And aren't we all waiting for Mech wrestling? ;)

I say no to this; to me eSports killed SC2 multiplayer. it forced Blizzard to abandon cool
but unstable effects/units/tactics for the sake of uniformity so that the game could be used
as a 'sport.' Then with eSports comes players stripping away any enjoyment of the story for
the pure use of numbers - unit stats, weapon stats, actions per minute. Many players enjoy
this yes; but it should have been a game mode, a 'competition mode' so to speak and normal
SC2 multiplayer be something different

Wasn't there some form of rugby played back on Mercs? I was one of the people who refused (for what reason I can't remember) to switch over to mercs from Veng, but I seem to remember talk of Rugby games being played in mercs...

Also I've voiced this a few times in the past: ghost cam for commentary HEL YEH

If they want to pimp out Solaris and start throwing cash tourneys out there, that's fine.

i want nothing to do with it, and most likely I will be too busy playing to bother watching.

(just make sure the devs get a piece of the prize pool for beer money).

I think this game would do well in E-sports. For example, I think a game like SC2 is a better game because of E-sports. SC2 Multiplayer is the best part of the game. Each race and units brings something unique to each game. It's a fun game once you understand what and how to play.

Why do people watch e-sports? People like to watch people play games. They watch for a number of reasons. Some watch to learn, some watch for the enjoyment and some to cheer on their team, person or friend. It's not strange or anything new. Think about it for a second, people do it all the time. Baseball, basketball and football are all games that are physical sports that people watch. This game and the people that play it would benefit from it. Because it keep the game up to date with adjustments that may be need for balance and players get to show their skills off. As a company you dream of millions of people enjoying your game and spreading that joy to others.

This game does not have to join MLG, it could join any number of other organizations or form their own.

Overall, I feel that if this game became an e-sport. It would be an amazing experience.

The only thing I've got against this is the elitists, scrubs and munchkins that come along with it, but the mech customisation is already going to attract the last two, and we've already got a few elitists here anyway. So go for it, I guess :v

I want to see this game popular in as many ways as possible as this game will be my primary time waster for the forseeable future. (As long as it is good). I personally would love to watch some high level play in an eSports setting with this game in particuar. I cheer just as hard for SC2 games as I do during the Superbowl.

Replays would be amazing as well. Spectator mode in replays would be a great way to enjoy those purchasable paint jobs ;)
