since i paid for the hero mech, it would be nice if i could use the colors and patterns as if i had bought them too.

Patterns are locked to the respective Hero mech. Other mechs just don't have the skins afaik.

Would love to be able to change colors though. Never understood why that isn't possible.

Ask The Devs 32 answers. They came up a few days ago. In march, they are unlocking the ability to change the colors.
