Critical Slots control two things.

1. What size equipment can be put into an area of a mech.

2. When the armor is stripped off the mech how easy it is to gain a critical hit on that component. Bigger things get hit more often.

The first is, in combination with weight, a balancing thing for weapons and equipment.

Just remember that your mech has a limited number of slots. When you place something on your mech (weapons, ammo, equipment, etc) it uses a specific number of crit slots. You cannot place certain guns in certain places because of this. Upgrades, as well as xl engines, use more crits than their counterparts. Obviously, you can't fit everything on one single mech so it's best to use weapons/upgrades that work well with each other. Once you have every crit in your mech filled they should change color and be locked.

Hope this helps.

If you're a visual person think of it is as how much volume your mech can hold. Each equipment has a volume signified as a critical slot. So a SRM4 that takes up one crit slot can fit in just about any single critical slot, but a SRM6 takes 2. Why does this matter?

Look at the Jenner 7-D, it has 2 Missile Hardpoints in the Center Torso, but with an engine there are only 2 critical available for other equipment. So you can either mount 2x SRM4's in the CT location for 8 missile volleys or 1x SRM6 for 6 missile volleys.

As you can see critical slots help limit a platform in conjunction with weight, heat, and hardpoints.

You'll see similar issues when using an AC/20 vs Gauss in terms of critical slots. Most mechs can't mount an AC/20 except in a torso, but if you do so, there is not enough room for an XL engine on the mech then.

Hope that helps!

You can use utilities like this to help you with builds without actually buying anything:

Just select a mech and go.
