Gpu Running Hot

I have a GeForce GTX 560 with the latest drivers. I don't have a problem with the rest of my system but for completion I am running Windows 7 64-bit and an Intel Core2 Quad Q9650 3.00GHz CPU, 8 gigs RAM and a 750 Watt power supply.

Immediately after logging into MechWarrior my GPU heat starts to creep up. It runs at about 28C at desktop with just windows. After a couple minutes it is running ~65C from just the base mechwarrior client. It doesn't do this for any other game and will run SC2/LoL/Warframe etc at much lower temperatures. Adjusting the video settings doesn't do anything as even the client causes it to run hot. The temperature actually doesn't change much between the client and the actual game (I run fullscreened) with one notable exception, at the end of a game at the credits screen the temperature slams up to 80C+ and the GPU load hits 100%, it can be seen at this image: http://i.imgur.com/4PtWPXl.png . That GPU usage plateau where it hits 100% is when we won the game. The drop right after is when I hit exit game to go back to the base client screen.

I just updated drivers an hour ago, I dusted out the case/GPU as well. I have tried changing all the settings to low, medium, high, whatever. None of that has had an impact on the temp of the GPU.

My computer continues to run other games just fine, and the CPU runs fine in Mechwarrior as well. This appears to be specifically a GPU problem with the game. Any ideas? For now I have a MSI Afterburner custom fan setup that keeps the temp below 70C for the most part, but I really shouldn't have to do that for this one specific game, and I would prefer not to have my GPU fans running at 100% constantly when I do not have to do that for any other game I play.

Edit: I guess I should also say that my framerate is excellent throughout and the game looks great, it just makes my GPU go crazy.

Same here I'm running a 660ti but I am about to cut a bigger fan hole in that part of my case, put a nice big 120mm where the 80 is right now.

Kinda easy for me because I am using acrylic but definatley something to consider as a game making your CPU run hot is a result of demand which most cry 3 games come with in spades.

You should at-least try what i currently have (80mm fan right on the bad boy) to see if you can atleast vacume away some of the hot air.

I want to start off by saying that 80C is not dangerous for your video card, so if you have concerns that something is going to melt you can rest assured. The maximum safe temperature for the 560 is 99C. I'd only truly worry if you were hitting 95+. That said, having GPU fans run at 100% can certainly be annoying.

You say that you only truly notice a huge spike in GPU utilization and temperature when you're at the round end screen. The only thing I can think of for this is to try enabling Vsync. My suspicion (and I've done no testing to confirm this) is that, since the round end screen would be a relatively simple frame to render, that the GPU is going crazy and pumping out every last frame it possibly can. This would lead to high GPU usage and thus temperatures.

It would be very similar to an issue that Starcraft 2 had in its' early days. People were complaining that their GPUs were maxing out at 100% with high temperatures just sitting at the main menu for the game. This was because Blizzard didn't put any type of frame rate limit on the menu screen, so people's graphics cards were literally pumping out 200+ FPS since the main menu was so easy to render. I think eventually Blizzard did code in some type of frame rate cap so people would stop freaking out.

This is all only a hunch, though. Try Vsync and see if it helps.

vsync is your friend... and they say AMD drivers are bad, GG

Try rolling back your driver. The latest driver caused some people to allegedly run hot on their GPUs.

I tried VSync and rolling back my drivers to 3.13.96 which the op in that other driver thread said worked for him. I now run at about ~62C which is way more appropriate. The base home screen still takes it up to 55C which I think is a little strange, but whatever. Thanks for the help!

Have a similar problem with a HD 7770. Will try the VSync solution.

*edit: Does not seem to help, still running too hot.

I have the same issues with my 7950s [well, 7950, since xfire support isn't available] The game is nowhere NEAR optimized on either a CPU or GPU level. It is not uncommon to hit 80c+ over the course of the match on the GPU. I also get the CPU "creep" with temps in the mechbay. Again, this is just very unoptimized code, and HOPEFULLY as they progress with development these issues will be addressed. For now, you're already doing what you can do to combat this by using afterburner. [no, you SHOULDN'T have to, but you probably will be anyway until they've optimized it]

Download MSI afterburner and increase the fan speed. Guess you did that.

Check the airflow on your tower? And enable vsync.
