I understood you could swap out EXT in unwanted mechs...how?

You seemingly have to own the variant to do it (but I'm not sure as I"ve not sold any variants just yet). You also have to have unlocked all the basic skills for that variant. Once all basic skills are unlocked, there should be a button that shows up under the XP amount (in the center pane once you've selected that variant from the list on the right).. Clicking that button brings up an interface that lets you move a slider to decide how much XP you want to shift.. and it tells you how much MC that will cost.

Yes. You have to pay real cash to get the mech XP converted to GXP.

You need to fill all the Basic skills before you can convert any mech XP into GXP.

Converting costs MC (the cash currency you need to purchase)

converting XP is a 'convenience feature', not a requirement. so they charge you for the transaction.
