To be honest, there are fair complaints about ELO.
However, these are only the complaints about weight being disregarded.

Upside:

I get to play against equal players. The people on my team are no longer mindless and clueless (no offense to new players. We all started that way). I can expect to get into a sniper or support position and no one will stop right in front of me. I can expect to get enemy positions, and communication, and not get ignored (sometimes ;) ).

Downside:

Some matches I will have zero ECM mechs on my side and the enemy wil have 3 - 5. I have played several matches in a row where that happened to me. We lost a few and some came close but still. The same thing has also happend with lights and assaults. I will have three Atlases on my side or three 3L Ravens and they will have none or vice versa.

Or you could just go with the flow and listen to ELO's greatest hits and have some fun playing MWO ;).

I think ELO is coming back to bite ## me when I screw around with goofy mechs. I do pretty well in my more optimized builds but when I drop in in a Wang or something, I'm facing the same level teams and it takes some of the fun out of it.

Unfortunately, I can't think of another way to do it, but it is taking some of the fun out of messing around with less effective variants and weird builds.

(seriously, the filter catches bite - - - me? Are we in Romper Room?)

I am still sceptical of ELO.
In the long term it could very much drain away my motivation to play this game.

After all, if I work to play better, what will I get in return?
Nothing, absolutely nothing.
If I play like crap, I will win half of the time.
If I play very well, I will win half of the time.

So why bother playing well?
My problem is that getting better is my main motivation in competive games, both in and outsider of computer. I want to play good so that I will win more. If playing good will not get me more wins, I don't know why I should try to play better.

Now, that doesn't mean that ELO will be necessarily bad. After all, nothing says that ELO has to settle for 50% wins. And there may be other motivational factors that are not yet in this game.
Well, I will see.

Translation: I want to get good enough to stomp players worse than myself.

Gotta love that can-do attitude!

Suppose you'd love it then if the clans that do RHOD got to go up against you every game and let you get between 0 and 100 damage every game? Oh really you wouldn't like that? But that's what you want to do to lesser players? Greaaaat.

+1 for that. Multiple rounds last night with flocks of 3-5 ECM Ravens on the other team, while my team didn't have any lights at all. Birds of War flock together.

Reenactment: http://25.media.tumb...bqxsmo1_500.jpg

The quickfix is to just run your Raven, so you'll get dropped with similar teams.

wrong. league of legends has a ladder system now. it features six leagues from "Bronze" to "Challenger" each with five different tiers (except "challenger"). riot games moved away from their old ELO system because it gave players nothing to achieve but ELO itself. competitive play is much more fun now.... i guess ;)

check it out here: http://competitive.n...m/league-system

just pointing that out.

To clarify:
I never ever complained about getting stomped.
I played over 500 games as PUG and my win/loss ratio never went positive. But I worked hard to get my win/loss from about 25% up to about 40%.

This was fun.
This is what what makes playing fun to me.
With ELO I would get many more wins, probably 50% exactly. And it would feel like I achieve much less.

(PS: I was almost exclusively playing Commandos, which made it even harder)

The problem with ELO is that it is made for CHESS. where everybody has the same rules and same pieces. MWO has far to many variable for just ELO to work. ELO in MWO is like one player having 3 kings and 2 queens whle the other only has one of each.

ELO combined with something like tonnage limits/balance would likely work better.

If you had researched a little more then you'd know that LoL still uses Elo internally to match players. The only change is that their Elo rating is now hidden (as in MW:O) and the Ladder Rank is the visible measure of success.
