I once played on a similar laptop until a few weeks ago:
i7 720QM - Quadcore @ 1.6GHz
ATi 5650M with 1Gb
8Gb RAM
Played on lowest settings (in game and in driver) 720p @ 20-25fps

Now playing on a new desk top:
i7 3820 = Quadcore O/C'ed to 4.3GHz
Ati 7970GE with 3Gb
32Gb RAM
Playing on highest settings possible (in game and in driver) 1080p @ 60fps, never dips, ever.

Well, now I have an even stranger experience with FPS in MWO. I built myself a mini-ITX system, and initially put a cheap Radeon 7750 in it. Performance was better than the 550M in the notebook but not stellar. Then one of my friends lent me his old GC - a GTX 285 - so that I could test my 12V power before upgrading.

Initially I left the Win7SP1 285 driver and didn't bother installing the NVIDIA one as it's not my card. In most other games the difference between the 7750 and the 285 was about 60-70% (note it's a very low-end 7750 and a good 285). This is about what I'd expect from benchmark results. But in MWO, a different world... the 7750 I settled on playing at everything low but medium shadows at 1280x800, the 285 I played at 1440x900 ultra high (inc AA). The 285 frame rate was still about 5-10 FPS better than the 7750! Also, when I first put the 285 in on the old settings it had jumped to over 300% of the frame rate that the 7750 had been doing.

Here's where it gets weird... when I installed the NVIDIA drivers, the 285 then dropped in performance to where maybe 1440x900 medium was smooth(ish). This puts the relative 7750 vs 285 performance about the same as other games; the 285 is better, but not 300% better. To recap, smooth settings were:
  • 7750 with latest ATI drivers: 1280x720, low but medium shadows (I like shadows)
  • 285 with Windows 7 SP 1 bundled drivers: 1440x900, ultra high (even 1680x1050 is fine on Alpine)
  • 285 with latest NVIDIA drivers: 1440x900, medium
I don't want to become the guy on the MWO forums who is regularly promoting the use of old drivers, and maybe there's something I'm missing... does anyone have any ideas?

FPS is a huge factor. I play at 50-60 (capped at 60 with no vsync) and i would do much better if i could run a stable/capped 120.
