So I bought a C4 so I could complete my catapult basic training today, stripped out the SLs and put in a TAG.

Holy crap, why doesn't anyone mention that it counters ECM on its target? I can practically smell those 3L and DC pilots sweating as they get to hear "Warning: Targeted". It smells like joy.

I still hate ECM but being able to light them up under the shield makes me feel a lot better.

Eating up an Energy slot kinda sucks, but really a pretty cheap price for what it does.

While tag is effective as such, it requires constant tagging and you need LOS to fire LRMs. Not a perfect counter.

Tag doesn't work when you're under 180m.

Pretty much.
A pair of Artemis LRM launchers and a TAG makes a very very nasty weapons system right now.
On the plus side, I have killed lots of ECM mechs using just a pair of 10s. On the down side you tend to attract every 3L Raven in the vicinity.

Doesn't exactly trump ECM. If an ECM Mech gets too close, they can disrupt your Mech, and tag won't work.

TAG works much better on LRM support mechs. Stood behind an LRM boat and its 3M 'guardian'. Giggled as our side launched every LRM available at the boat dropping it in seconds. LOLed as the Cicada ran along the hill they had been hiding behind to get away. I had to switch to counter on my 3L because I got tired of maintaining the right distance. That he finally noticed and looked around. Too late.

Neither do the LRMs, so.

Yeah, the C4 is pretty much the best LRM cat. The combination of 4 missile hardpoints, 20 tubes per arm, and the two energy hardpoints for TAG is just perfect. I run mine with 2ALRM20's, 2SSRM2's, TAG, and a small laser. XL300, DHS, endo, BAP, no JJ.

I find that the trick to doing stupid amounts of damage is to actually get close to the enemy, preferably under 300m (or 270 so I can also fire the SSRMs) so that there's not enough time for them to get to cover or break the lock after the missiles have been launched. Between the massive torso twist range and going 82.whatever after speed tweak, I can keep outside of the 180m minimum range with most non-light mechs while still lobbing LRMs and streaks at them.

And yes, I have gotten a kill with the small laser. It was against a stripped hunchback that only had a TAG in its head, but that's enough to justify it for me.
