Endo
DHS
300xl
gauss with 3t of ammo
srm6 with 1t of ammo
4x mlas
Got all ranges covered and a nice alpha. Arm mounted lasers are great. Its a Dragon and they suck so you can feel special when doing good in it.
Wang
Endo
DHS
300xl
2x mlas
ac20 with 5t of ammo
(The FF, Endo, 250standard, 4t of ammo version sucks to)
It sucks even more than Dragons and mediums have no place in this game not even for having fun. You can feel even more special when doing good in it.
Those are the best two mechs (loadouts may vary) in the game for me.

Is it that you're a little short of MC? I say if you're dropping the money for a hero, get the hero you actually want. I've seen some pretty good Flame and Fang builds but of the hero mechs Ilya is far and away the most effective.
3xUAC5, 2 Medium lasers, MANY MANY MANY MANY MANY tons of AC5 ammo, a big Xl engine and you're zipping around tearing things up like you wouldn't believe.

This x1000
Run this build = profit. Everyone underestimates dragons(rightfully so, Flame and 1C only ones worth taking), but this build f*cks sh*t up! Its what ive been running in at least 85% of my matches since upgrades were implemented.

Any mech is only as good as its pilot, but YLW certainly has the least amount of flexablilty.
Basically, if you don't like to rely on an AC20, a gauss, 2 UAC5's, or 2 AC2's, then you will not enjoy this mech.
I love running it as an AC20 brawler.

A bit of advice on the hero choices is that they do plan on having numerous heros for mechs meaning in the future there will be a hero for much, probably not all but much of the mechs.
If I were you, I'd get a Pretty Baby for versatility... but I haven't gotten one, I settled for the 9M and yes, I bought it twice

Barring that, I would look into the Flame build that people are posting. I don't like the Flame as much but ymmv.

A gauss in your torso with an XL engine? Does that kill you often? It seems like a risky proposition to me.
Not really, because dragons are a center torso with legs attached to it. Its really hard to hit anything but the ct.
I lose the srm6 (ct) pretty often so i dont think its only perception.
