So, here's how you fix flamers:

1. Make trees flammable. A flamer that hits a tree automatically lights it on fire.

2. Trees that are on fire spew smoke in a 30 meter radius around the tree. The smoke disrupts visual and IR sensor modes.

3. Trees within 30 meters of a tree that is on fire have a 5% per second chance of igniting; trees which are on fire have a 5% per second chance of going out.

This is what flamers are for in the TT game, and there is nothing sweeter than lighting a forest on fire and then advancing under cover of the smoke.

Network-wise, this could be done reasonably easily without lag, since you only need to send the following info:

1. Tree #<tree_id32> is now on fire
2. Tree #<tree_id32> is no longer on fire

Since there are less than 4 billion trees per map, you should be able to transmit the current 'fire' state of all trees without using much bandwidth.

Sounds like Conway's Game of Life. Do you want to build a Turing machine of burning trees?

I admit, the idea does hold strong appeal to me. :)

But yeah. Fix flamers, then introduce the Firestarter. It'd be hilarious!
