It doesn't make a difference if you're focused down. It'll definitely make you more durable in situations where you're only taking fire from one or two baddies. The thing that's been killing me with the XL AWS' of late (and CTFs too for that matter), is that the shoulders are so big and prominent that they're almost magnets for snipers. It only takes one or two good smacks to knock your torso to where you need to think twice before stepping in to brawl. The 8R is great that way. You can be missing half your mech and not have any concerns about that. Don't get me wrong, I still do well with both the 9M and PB - but I can't help but think. I'd be so much more valuable to a team if I could just soak more damage.

As for my 8Q and 9M, it's XLs all day long.

With the 21 DHS I can shoot 4 alpha strikes before overheating and on some maps I can shoot 5! That combined with the armor and good speed (66.8km with Speed Tweak) and excellent heat management takes this mech out of the support role and allows it to take a lot of mechs head on. It can kill most mechs 1vs1 I find. It only really has troubles with the Atlas but even then you'll win many a duel with them (although that may be because of bad piloting on the Atlas's part). I've been scoring 400-700 dmg pretty consistently with this loadout.

AWS-8R
Only debate is whether to change to 2MPL to LL for some extended range.
I am really liking the new artemis flight path, although it does cause the LRM 60 barrage to hit in 2 waves.
Great build. I am working on something very similar.
IMO, http://mwo.smurfy-ne...3e0f03f63ce73d9 is a stronger build because a) it has greater range, b) it can disrupt enemy ECM, c) AMS is once again relevant (to some extent), and d) it makes better use of the "dead arm."

I'm struggling with my 9M at the moment. I think I'm going back to an SRM build, as laser/PPC only builds just don't seem to work for me. Not enough damage, so it's had to finish kills. Nothing I've tried on it feels powerful enough.

I don't think it's a bad thing that people can't boat ERPPCs like that, it's a little bit too good to run any cooler.
This is my 9M build, also 22 DHS:

I don't run missiles on the 9M because I don't like streaks, and there's not much else worthwhile to do with 2-tube launchers. You could replace the arm-mounted PPC with an ER version if you want something for extreme close or long range. Also, I chain-fire the MLAS when running hot.
If I want to use ERPPCs, I use two on my 8Q:

I don't know. The 9M just isn't working for me at the moment.

Eh, I find three to be useful in more situations... any more than that, and you are treading into novelty-build territory IMO. That is to say, something is really great 10% of the time and horrible the other 90%.
Not my style, but whatever works for you.

i desperately tried to boat 3 er PPC, but it only works with a ton of heatsinks if you don't equip any other weapons;
try this build if you can:
http://mwo.smurfy-ne...d35c712e7c584c3
to solve all my problems i swapped one of the 3 ERPPC with a regular PPC.
i just shoot the 2 ER at range and then the 3 up close; the laser is for spam when running hot but the missiles are really what cements it. you could do 10 missiles but i cut a lot of armor off the legs to go 12
standard engine leaves you with 2 srm4 on the body and 1 medlaser on head even when side torsos are gone.
took me a while to figure this build out, i was feeling very dissapointed with many of the builds i tried
if it's too hot you could get rid of the medlas or change the arm srm4 for an srm2
