It seems that whenever I talk to people about successful builds vs fast mechs it always seems they have 2 things in common. One is SRMs, the other is 'single impact' weapons like PPCs and ballistics.

Lasers just don't seem to do too much- the damage gets spread all over and you end up dead with not thing to show for it but a lot of yellowed armor on your opponent. The only exception are mechs like the Hunchback 4P that packs a LOT of energy weapons and can do decent damage, even if it gets spread around.

Has this been everyone else's experience as well?

In my experience lasers work just fine against any and all fast mechs except for Ravens sometimes, their hitbox somehow soaks up the bulk of the damage.

Lasers are great v lights, especially in arm mounts on mechs with articulated limbs.

If you are targeting their bodies, you are doing it wrong. Lasers against lights are for legging. Aim low, and you damage both of their legs. Do it enough and you cripple the thing, plus you likely rendered the other leg really vulnerable for a quick finish (losing both legs is a kill).

I actually prefer the slower ballistics (AC20s and such) and SRMs over high-velocity guns like Gauss and PPCs for doing body hits against lights. I just find it easier to manage the lead for some reason.

IMO it's a "what are you good with?" thing. Are you better at tracking targets, leading targets, or hitting targets with slow projectiles that have really generous hit detection?

Yea, PPCs and ballistics are great if you have a lot of practice with them, but don't just throw one on your mech and expect to be hitting Ravens right away if you haven't used it before.

As for lasers, I've found the regular larger laser to be the best light-mech repellent. There's just something about the damage and beam duration that makes it effective when you are looking for where exactly to lag-shoot.

SSRM may be the top of the line weapon for hitting fast moving targets, but they are far less usefull when facing slower and heavier armored targets. A light with lasers can core a heavy mech from behind in a few seconds. But lasers are some what less effective against other lights, so it's a matter of what you want to be best at.
