first off let me admit that I am not good at this game. From choosing a mech, to putting on the proper weapons, to learning the maps, and finally to hitting same target my team is shooting. It seems in every 4 games or so I get chewed out by some know it all. Why did you do this, or why are you over there, or what the heck were you shooting at.

Is there a way where I can disable the text chat in game so I don't have to read anybody's negative chat so I can just play the game. I know I am a poor player, but I do not need to hear about it and get bad advice from people who seem to suck as bad as I do.

As far as I know, there's no way to turn off the text chat. I think your best bet would be to find a Teamspeak server that doesn't take itself too seriously ad use that. I've found that if you're talking on Teamspeak and trying to read the chat, the TS wins out.
For the long run, you could try to find a merc corp that offers good training courses and fun people to play with. In my experience, the best way to get better is to figure out what you're doing poorly and figure out how to do it better, both things that are made much easier by having someone with you that knows what they're doing and is more interested in helping you get better than winning.

As above - I've never - ever - heard anyone being mean on TS and i've been using it for MWO since June last year, it's like a different world mate.

Jump on one of the community TS servers, ask to join a group (that has less than 4x players in it).
It doesn't matter if you're new, everyone enjoys helping out beginners, it's the nature of the game, and the vast majority of the playerbase is like 30+, sensible folk.

Once you're on TS, the meanest of the mean just becomes free comedy, something for you to laugh at while you're shooting robots, you find yourself laughing your head off at the audacity of some pugger calling you a noob while doing 1% of the damage and kills you did, or running of and dying alone then QQing that nobody sacrificed themselves to pull him out of the fire. ;)

Yeah, at the moment a lot of people take the game WAY too seriously. There are a lot of fun groups to hang out with but they aren't as vocal over the in game chat.

Ask around, crack jokes, use silly tactics, you'll find a nice group soon enough.

Me and a few friends have a group called "Team Inferno" on C3 which is dedicated to not taking the game too seriously and having fun. The biggest requirement is that you can quote at least one scene from Monty Python and the Holy Grail.

I feel for you. I had the big luck that I learned the ropes (though I am a bad pilot still) of the game early on when everysthign was shiny and new and people actually where friendly to each other. Those pilots still play, but the numbers seem to decline to the usual disillusioned "have-to-grind-mech.X" player how far more often seem to yell and call other players names than to help them or crack a joke.
All I can tell you and hope for is that you pull through this phase, find some enjoyable games and learn the basics.
And in a few weeks or months, depending on your learning curve and possibly friends you make along the way - remember your post here.
Cheers!

Well. Yah, sure it is helpfull and more fun. but you will most often here derregatory remarks on TS on fellow teammates which are NOT in TS. I hear those a lot : / Instead of typing "Fella, you don't use LRMs under range 170" ppl. often laugh in TS, or sneer or make remarks like "Boy, that loser, dumb as a chicken, uses lrms under range, lol".
Remember that also, don't get that way, try to stay helpfull. Even if on Ts with mates ;)
and it not allways happens, but sometimes, which makes me a bit sad.

Luckily with the new matchmaker the amount of new players the veterans face has gone down.
However for the new player this might be a bit two edged sword. You get grouped more with the less skilled players who might be troublemakers themselves.

Watching new players is slightly frustrating. The very basic mistakes usually are either firing ppc's under 90 meters unless absolutely necessary, firing lrms without lock or under 180 meters or firing srms at targets over 270 meters.

Going rambo by yourself is usually not a good idea either.

The recommendation on the teamspeak servers are good, I however haven't been on there for a while so can't really tell you how the community there has evolved if any.

There are a lot of good info in the Guides section of this forum so you could always check those out. That way you'll end up with a decent mech build and some idea on how to utilize it.

Well there's your comeback. When they are chastising you, tell them, "If you're so great, why is Match Maker putting you with me?"

Best way is to put out an "Dead man talking", everytime someone allready out uses his time to insult, instead of giving usefull advice - and afterewards ignoring.

No reason to argue with hatefull people.

Seen some people being real dicks to other players on chat, often the victim has not even done anything to deserve the abuse either but are attacked by some sore looser. Even seen a person who survived on the winning team insulting the loosing team for being idiots. Both teams had followed the exact same tactics, he just got lucky! (Base rush).

The point is the people giving out the abuse are those whose opinions matter the least, usually they are pretty bad at the game themselves but rather than improve or change their game/weapons/tactics they just blame others or the game in the servers or on the forums. Ignore them.

This game, I have found, is much tougher to get into than previous MW games, presumably because you are thrown straight in against humans instead of dumb AI bots. Expect to be the whipping boy for a while until you come to terms with the tactics, maps etc. It has a fairly steep learning curve but it was the same for everyone else starting out so do not think you are a bad player just yet as with practice you will learn and improve. Tactics and knowing how to use your specific mech and weapons load out will effect your success just as much as your skill so experience will make you a better player.

Internet people in general are terrible people. It would do you good to ignore the lot of them.

Say thanks to the ELO ratings : it's not here to make the game fun, but to determine who is the best, which is not the same thing.

As everyone has already said just ignore those asstards. Your best bet is to try and find a group of like minded people here on the forums to run with and train with. Preferably some folks that run in your play times.

Until then you can always ask those jerkbags if they have any helpful tips or are they just gonna keep frothing at the mouth. I fthey continue to froth definitely not worth your time.

Many tend to be jackasses once they become frustrated. Although sometimes it's just bad luck. Still, they blame the "noob team" or stuff like that. They got issues themselves, don't listen to them.

If they insult you personally, or your team directly, by calling you names, then take screenshots, report them.

If they just generally use expletives and dirty words, sorry, but Welcome to teh Internetz. :)

It's meant to match up players of similar skill, not find out who's best. "Finding out who's best" is done through ladders and tournaments. There's a subtle difference. It's meant to balance matches, not be a **** measuring system.

Shame some people treat it like that.

As for the rude people, just ignore them. Sticks and stones and all that. They only win if you let them get to you. Not gonna lie though, I like egging them on. It's amazing how much bile some of them can spew before the match ends.

Just remember:

Don't hate: obliterate!

I feel your pain Lariat! I'm worse than terrible, and as a result I not uncommonly get profanities directed towards me in chat.

As far as my skills (lack thereof actually), I'm old and uncoordinated, so I'm not likely to get much better! Not going to stop me from trying though!!!

Also, I'd just like to remind all those infantile individuals out there who berate me on chat (instead of offering constructive criticism or pointers) to remember two things:

1. Time is the ultimate predator
2. Karma is a b*tch

It's the other way around, matchmaking is using a ladder to class players and then match them.
But that was not exactly my point. What i was trying to say is that, the game is not fun anymore because of the Elo ratings that force you to play cheese build in order to have a more or less decent pug match thus people taking the game way too seriously thus the bad-mouthing of "lesser" skilled players.

On the bright side, the ELO ratings seem to work well in 8-team vs 8-team.

But i agree with you : don't hate them, get better and then kill them !

It's just a part of human nature. The anonymity of the internet sanctions this behavior. Don't take it personally.
